    Transaxles

This is a bit off topic.
    I,m building a 550 replica and looking at using a 915 transaxle.
Lot's of heated argument ensues in other forums at the mere idea, and more so at the suggestion of "flipping" the ring gear.
This forum has offered better information than most on related subjects, so, I figured someone here may be able to shed some light on this, and perhaps some technical detail.

Hello: Why use the 915 box? If I were you I would use a 901 gearbox. They are lighter and strong enough if you use the aluminum box. I made a gearbox for a Beetle using a 901 mag case from a 914 and the back section from a 70 901 box. The car that the gearbox went into has a type 4 2.3ltr turbo engine. The box works fine. On your spyder I would consider using a 914 side shifter gearbox. You don't have to flip the ring gear and you can make the shift rod for the side shifter. The last choice would be to use a Hewland gearbox from a formula Ford. They are a Bettle case with Hewland guts. They have quick change gears for differnt ratios. Good luck with your project. Thanks Eric
