    Stealth Stereo

I would like to install a stealth stereo in my 73. The original radio works so I don't want to mess with it. I don't want to cut or drill. I want to use my Ipod and XM radio. What set ups do you guys have, and I know the best music is the sound of the engine.

    best stealth

I use an original becker, although the blaupunkts are similarly equipped.

In the day, an am/fm often got an external cassette deck, or 8 track, even a record player, so the high-end units had a din plug on the back that would allow an aux source to be wired in. My mercedes becker (mexico, I have a europa in the 911) has a preset button 'Q' to allow the aux source to be played.

Anyway, I have the aux inputs on both cars wired to the glove box, and I plug in my ipod. easy, clean, invisibible, and can easily be returned to stock.

The din cable was purchased from becker autosound in montvale, NJ, they have them for the beckers and blaupunkts.

I have a 'boom box' that I built and covered with grey felt. It sits on top of the folded down back seats and contains a powered antenna, CD/am/fm receiver and two 6x9's. I control it with an IR remote mounted on a bracket between the seats (using the rear parking brake handle bolt). The unit draws power by way of a fused quick disconnect (old blaupunkt speaker jack) back to the battery. When I take the box out, I tuck the wire under the rear seat upholstery so that the 1973 unit in the dash maintains originality. The unit is hot 100% of the time when it is installed so that I do not loose the pre-sets on the radio. On of these days I hope to be able to get my kid to take digital pictures so I can post them.

I have a totally-stealth Kenwood self-powered sub which just fits in the smugglers box with the lid closed. 2 Kenwood 6X9s in/on the rear package shelf in a custom box which looks very close to the factory parcel shelf- just a wee bit taller. Tweeters installed in dash under speaker grill. All is completely hidden and as close to stock looking as possible.

I am a firm believer that an iPod is the initial ticket to stealth.

Don't have any shots of the build, but have a couple of so-so shots of the finished product. The parcel shelf's original leather had 2 circular areas of perfs which I replicated. The mysterious hardware in one is the inside of the garage door.

    Thanks Randy.

The UFO perched on the shelf is an LED third brake light. Originally it was mounted at the top of the widow, but even with its low profile, it obscured visibility. Mounted on the shelf solves the problem (however is now externally visible) and affords me an extra degree of security. I don't remember the original study, but 3rd brake lights I believe reduced rear enders by approximately 30%. I also upgraded the regular brake lights to halogen and they are noticeably brighter. But back to sound...

Clean install Ed and Rick. I think I'm going to buy one of those DIN cables and wire to the glove box to my ipod or xm. Update my door speakers. I was reading a thread where someone was looking a RCA plugs for a power amp? Anyone out there done that?
    Ed I pm ya.
