Thread: Oil Leaks?

    Oil Leaks?

It would seem that oil leaks on a 911 are not uncommon depending on the age of the car or engine. To what degree can one expect oil leaks from a thoroughly rebuilt 911S engine with only a couple of thousand miles on it. I would not have thought it unreasonable to expect no leaks for quite some time.

    Any comments?

    Thanks for the feedback.

That is not an unreasonable expectation, but of course it all depends on the "reubild" you had done. I have a 1971 2.2 with about 40,000 on my reubilt engine and I leak one drop a week at most. So I would say if it is a fresh rebuild and it leaks enough to see a puddle after a few days, than the rebuild sucks.

It should have no leaks for some time, however I have seen the situation where many reconditioned parts are used and resurfaced and so on, and the leaking may start right away from a proplem with an original part that was surfaced, reconditioned or whatever. Identify it and fix it and then you should be OK. I have had breather covers leak when I though the surface was good when resurfaced and I have had return tubes leak because of the corrosion around the crankcase tube hole. In both cases I was forced to use sealer, normally these areas only call for a gasket or an O ring. Once I fixed these issues no more leakes years later.
