    Finding Rally Information

I was reading the thread about the East Africa Safari Rally and I think it's about the most bitchin' thing there is to do with a vintage Porsche. Is there a central place online to find information about upcoming events? Are there publications that provide coverage?

I have two sons who are into old Porsches as much as I am and I'm itching to build a rally car and go racing with them.

    Cheers,

There's some guys in the UK. They have a group called "Simply Sideways" I think. They had a couple of classic Porsche rally cars they were going to do the Safari in. I ready about them in a UK Porsche or Classic car mag. I read so many mags I get confused. Maybe worth tracking some info down on them.

BTW: If you are looking to adopt I'd be more than willing to come along too. I'm a good son. Just ask my Dad!
    Cheers,

    Steve

I rally with "Slowly Sideways", usually navigating the 911 that Björn Waldegård just drove to 7th place in the Safari. That car was the Porsche Works entry to the London to Sydney Rally in 1977 driven by Zasada.

A friend of mine, Jim Avis, has used his ex- Björn Waldegård 1971 911ST in Slowly sideways events and I am currently building a 3.0 911 rally car for these and other events.

Slowly sideways is a loose group of owners of old rally car that are either ex-works, close replicas or have a significant period history. There are Escorts, Metro 6R4s, various Lancias, Saabs, Renault Alpines etc. etc.

I am not sure if I admire you vintage rally guys more for your willingness to put yourselves in hairball situations balls to the wall or because you fix up a car (like the ex BW ST or Olivers) so it looks soooooo nice and then just destroy it !
You guys all deserve to be rewarded - then locked up - then taken out for champagne - then hit over the head - then given another car ....!

    Bravo;

    Check out:

This is a blast! Did it with my 356 a couple of years ago and my friend did it with his '69S last year. The "Touring" section is a very difficult and competive TSD rally, but on paved roads that have been closed for the event (speeds are high). The Targa section is nuts - requires properly equipped cars (roll cages, etc.), and a desire to drive at insane speeds for 6 long days on very twisty roads!
People come from all over the world for this, and the variety of cars is amazing.

Yes, he's the one. I'm going back this year, but not with my 356! Possibly a 944. It's rough on the car.

Damn, if I had my old chevette that would be such a blast ! Though it would be more fun on the snow and ice.

Even Chevettes are welcome, but no snow or ice - maybe just lots of rain, and on those roads that's scary enough!!

here's 2 more for you all to consider:

targa tasmania - 5 days lapping australia's island state

    www.targa.org.au

classic adelaide - 4 days in south australian wine country

    http://www.classicadelaide.com.au/ca/

i've done tt 3 times (best finish 15th in classic) and ca 5 times (best finish 8th in classic) - all in my 2.7RS replica

tt has longer stages whilst ca has better weather...

they are awesome events - i believe targa newfoundland is modelled on targa tasmania
