    Critical Analysis Wanted on 70T

There is a viper (no orignal color) targa on ebay. Things I have spotted, deco stips F/R don't match - is there rear original or from an even earlier car. The car is set a rally height or beyond. It is tarted up to mimic a 73. and is missing outside mirror. Anyone familiar with this car or seller? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-...QQcmdZViewItem

All comments welcomed (besides doing a PPI)

There sure is a lot of green paint everywhere - a bit sloppy in my opinion. Ride height is way too high - why was it done? Why would someone want to take a 1970 and make it look like a 73? And it still has one of the least powerful 911 engines built. Definitely a PPI is needed... maybe worth $10K?

    Stefan,
Why do you say that? What do you know of this vehicle?

    Thanks,

Notice that obligatory oil drip catcher... and the paint color doesn't quite look like viper green - a bit too light (at least in the photos). Otherwise... from a jpeg perspective - looks like a good driver with a few minor needs. Definitely get a PPI though!!!

Sherwood, my remark was mostly tongue in cheek but after looking at the photos on the provided link this car looks as if it is a conglomeration of pieces from different years and has many “stories.”.

The wheels look like some the cheap repro's that are out there. The interior door trim and panels are out of a '74 or later car yet this is a 70 masquerading as a '73. The ride height is out of control and I’m wondering for what reason (tire clearance?) was this car jacked up on its suspension.. It appears to be leaking oil from the pan strategically placed that one can see in all the photos.

The disclaimer that has been typed under the last photo makes me suspicious of anything this seller has said or will say about this car. Does this guy know what a matching numbers car is? He states the car is in “super clean” showroom condition? After looking at the photos the guy obviously has no clue what he’s talking about

My advice is buyer beware. If it’s purchased as a parts car or a major project it might be an OK buy, as long the buyer does due diligence prior to sale.

I would look for a car in better shape but that depends on one's budget. Perhaps I'm being too anal...

    Thumbs down Run !!!

He has had other cars for sale under a different name on ebay.I looked at a 73.5T he had and was told after a PPI by a well respected Porsche shop to move on.Full disclosure-had had an accident, incorrect mileage- was considerably lacking.Spray cans are part of his marketing plan!

    Stefan,
There are some who aren't into concours and strict adherence to attaching only correct model year components onto our 911. The beauty of the 911 series is in part because so many parts are interchangeable; update, MY-correct or backdate. It's all subjective and based on one's personal tastes and sensitivities. For a couple of years, I had those larger-than-life '73 rear bumper guards on my just-restored '69, mainly because I was paranoid about getting intimate with close-following/parked cars. I now live on the edge with the factory bumper guards. The white paint on my car is no where near the proper 911 white, but I don't lose sleep over it. If this guy's viper green was applied correctly but a little off-hue from the official green, I guess one could nit-pick. The overspray on the bottom of the rockers, however, is an indication somebody wasn't careful about masking; maybe also a clue about other details we can't see.

Web pictures increase the visual attractiveness by about 30-40%%. If the report is that this specimen is not represented as shown, I'd pass on it or price it accordingly; otherwise a personal inspection is always recommended. There'll come a time when many buyers will be quite satisfied with just sound, rustfree metal - never mind paint and mechanicals. If you're into 356s or anything in or before that era, you know what I mean.

    Sherwood,

I know exactly what you mean. The tub actually does look fairly solid from what one can surmise from the link and this may be a very good "project" car, mechanicals and trim be damned.

I am completely in support of the idea pf personalizing one's own Porsche. But when it is so poorly done I have concerns. And many of the things I can see (as you have noted) on the photos do indicate a lack of concern and preparation which leads me to be troubled about other details.

The bottom line is how much is one willing to spend on this car and then budget for whatever project they wish to undertake?

    Caveat emptor...
