    Question About Through-the-Grille Driving Lights

I just installed a pair of through-the-grille driving lights on my '73 S and had a couple of questions:

    (1) When these were installed on '73's, were the black plastic grilles used? We used the chrome ones I had as a pattern and cut out a pair of plastic ones for my car. I think they look great - and the price is right. Plus I still have my chrome ones that I can use to install lights on my '72 S Targa.

    (2) And speaking of the chrome ones, I sent them to Queen City in Seattle for rechroming and they have quoted me a price of $450 - each! I know they're pot metal, but is this a real world number?

    Thanks,
    John Audette

There's a recent extensive discussion, complete with diagrams, here:

No plastic used in '73. My '73 came with the chromed pot metal with the cut outs for the fogs from the factory.

I too like the look of black grills, ordered a pair black plastics for cheap and modified them to replicate the cut outs on the originals. Considering the originals value, I have them in safe keeping if and when I sell the car.

There has to be more cost effective platers in the area, however I send my replating needs to Ideal Custom Plating in Tucson, AZ. They do a first rate job, and their rates are very reasonable. 520 882-9090

1973 911s that had thru the grill fog/driving lights installed at the Porsche factory prior to delivery had chrome metal cut grilles. When these same lights were ordered from the dealer some time after delivery of 1973 911s, the grilles that came with the kit were black plastic cut grilles.
