    Racing License Plates

    LeMans, Nurburgring and the Tour de France were all held, at least partially, on public roads. As such, race cars had to have license plates for these events. Here's a website with a fairly comprehensive listing of those plates.

    http://home.planet.nl/~hvasmel/plates-by-make.htm

    Click on 'Germany' in the pull down menu at the top and then scroll down to Porsche. Lots of early 911s listed.

    Can you imagine trying to put that list together?? Something only a retired DMV clerk could enjoy!

    Were the public streets open to traffic during the races ? if not why would there be a need for plates ? it would be considered a "closed course" - what would be the need ? racers aren't observing traffic laws on a closed course

    Please forgive my reprehensible lack of knowledge where 911R's are concerned... and I don't mean to hijack this cool thread... but, can someone please explain why chassis 9110300949 is called a 911R on this list? Isn't that a 1970 911S chassis number?

    Hmmm

    I wouldn't place too much emphasis on the descriptions --- the writer may just be reading an entry list? Anyway . . .

    9110300949 = 911 S/T

    According to The Redbook (P Paternie) --- 1-of-5 2.2 liter 'Rallye' cars built in '70

    More here . . .

    . . . and this is why VINs get posted

    lots of debate about that car................. Rick is right. it is a Werks rallye ST, and one of TWO known as "Rallye ST's" the other being 0950

    its first event was the 1970 Alpine rally where it won as car #3 where it won with Waldergaard
    then it did the RAC rally with Larousse (6th) both as S-R 2970
    It did the 1971 Monte Carlo as a service car with Barth before being sold to Meznarie and raced by Larousse on "trade plates" (i think 228WWL91) before being registered as 4833 QC 91 and later (in 1971) being sold to Larousse.

    here it is in first outing
