Thread: Mystery Momo steering wheel

    Mystery Momo steering wheel

This Momo wheel was on my '67S when I bought it several years ago. Unfortunately it was worn and I had it re-covered. After three trys I gave up on the recovering so the way it looks not correct. But originally it had tight and hard covering like a Prototipo wheel but the grip is a little fatter. Can anyone help me identify this Momo wheel and the signature on it? I think it's from the '60's or maybe '70's when Momo was bringing out steering wheels with driver's signatures.

Richard, can you post a clearer photo of the signature and the back side? Is there a Momo logo somewhere?

That appears to be a Ronnie Peterson Momo that was part of a series of driver named/autographed Momo variations from the early/mid '70's.

I had Jacky Ickx and Niki Lauda versions in the past, but there were quite a few more in the series as well, as I recall.

    Jens & Hoffen,
Thanks for your help. In looking at the signature on the wheel closely with a magnifying glass I think you are correct, it is a Ronnie Peterson Momo wheel. He raced in Formula 1 in the early to mid 1970's, driving for teams including March, Lotus & Tyrrell. He won a number of races. Unfortunately he was killed in an accident at Monza in 1978. He was known for his raw speed and also for his class as a racer. I've attached another picture to try to make the signature a little clearer. It's still hard to read but it does look like "Ronnie Peterson". You can see the MOMO logo just above the point on the spoke where the leather stops.

As requested, one more picture of the Momo steering wheel on a different background to be seen a little better. The wheel is 380mm, the same size as a Prototipo. The grip is a little thicker. The original covering was much like a Prototipo covering, very firm. This re-covering didn't work out and will have to be redone. Any recommendations on where it can be done right...to look original?

Nice wheel Richard. GeorgeK would do factory job of restoring that wheel, if you could talk him into it, that is. He has the hands of a surgeon...Dr. K!

I've got a Jackie Stewart and a Mark Donohue both in mint condition.

The Jacky Ickx was a dished version.....I'd love to find one for my rally car.

There was a Mark Donohue Momo? I'd love to see a photo of that.

I have an old Donohue signed Racemark (of which Donohue was a part owner), but I don't recall I've ever seen a Momo MD wheel.

I have the same wheel as pictured by Nick which is in the car now. Is it a rare wheel?
