Thread: period accessory or "Pep Boys Special"?

  1. #1

Question period accessory or "Pep Boys Special"?

    Hey guys-
Has anyone ever seen an engine-turned metal strip applied to the rear valance of an early 911, as shown in the photo?
Is this an aftermarket accessory of the period
    or a Pep Boy's special??
    Thanks,
    Gary Grasso

    Never seen anything like it.

I had one of those on my silver '73 (sold it long ago). I took it off, even though it was covering a dent, and threw it away. I hope that no one tells us it's valuable!

Given the history of my old '73, I would be inclined to say Pep Boys, but it's just a guess.

I've seen the turned panels in the interior... front door pocket kick plates and thresholds. In fact Bata's ex-Otis Chandler '73S had'm.

I think you could get them at the dealer's parts department as an aftermarket package... never saw a valance.

    definition and threads

damascening or damaskeening [–skēn'–] , the art of decorating iron, steel, or bronze with inlaid threads of gold or silver, or producing a watered effect in forging, as in sword blades, gun barrels, and various metal objects. The method, long practiced in the Middle East as well as in China and Japan, was highly developed in Italy. The inlay forms a delicate and intricate pattern upon the contrasting background. The whole fabric is penetrated by the ornamental treatment, so that grinding does not remove it.---I have seen a thread on this somewhere and there is a guy who does this for high end vintage race cars.
