Rare Very Early 1965 RHD 911 Coupe - Only Worth $30,000?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/1965-Porsche-911...QQcmdZViewItem

Okay, so I watched this auction pretty closely to see what the final price would be on this car thinking there would be some late bidding from deep pockets that would push this car into the lower stratosphere. Frankly, I don't understand why this car wasn't bid thru the roof?
In a nutshell, it is clearly a very rare, first year, one of a very small handful of rhd cars, 1965 911 coupe in a desirable color, and very original. Just by looking at how crazy prices for 356's have become, and considering the fact that the 356 pre-A cars are rare and expensive, why would this car not command as much or more than any 911S? The build number on these early cars in 1965 was limited to a few hundred - much less than any 911RS or 911S between 1966-73, In addition, performance wise the 1965-66 911 was the fastest non-race car Porsche manufactured at the time and could easily run with the 356 Carrera GT which had 130hp, non vented disc brakes, and a 4 speed gearbox (the early 901's had 5 speed) , not to mention a more sophisticated suspension compared to any 356. So it can't be an issue of low performance.
Could it be the fact that the car was restored? If so, it appears to have been restored correctly - it's even included as a nice early example in the Peter Morgan book. Furthermore, after reading all the stories about the first 911 (which Seinfeld paid stupid money for the factory to restore) and by numerous accounts was a basket case which the Porsche factory merely fabricated by lifting the VIN off the original car and rebuilding it from scratch from another early car, how is it that this car can only fetch $30k on EBay? Plse someone explain it to me?

Having owned the car for a few years, I can tell you that it's condition is not quite what it should be - and the reason I sold it (and bought the earliest RHD 'S' registered in the UK to replace it) was that its history isn't quite complete.

A chap contacted me on the Sunday before the auction was due to close, asking my opinion of the car - he went to look at it and realised it will need $20,000 spending on it within the next three to four years.

Finally, we have a crazy dynamic going on in the UK at the moment. Some very rare cars are commanding good money, others aren't - and the interest for 911's this early just isn't as strong over this side of the pond as it is on the other. If it had been a 2.2 or 2.4S then maybe....

Don't get me wrong - she's a rare car, well documented and great colour combination - but IMHO she's only worth maybe $35,000 as someone's going to have to spend to make her the ways she should be. For what it's worth - I sold it in 2004 for just over $30,000.
