    Should I Cancel My Vacation?

My wife and I are leaving next Thurs for an anniversary-vacation to Arizona. Great, right? Well today, I get a fax from my local Chapter of Professional Engineers regarding our upcoming monthly meeting. I rarely attend these because the speakers, material, food - and frankly, the other engineers - are so incredibly dry and boring! This month, the speaker is none other than Phil Fioravante. So what? Well, he's the Managing Director of Magnetti Marelli Motorsport!! His topic: his work on engine management, gear change control, telemetry, etc. for the 2006 F1 season!!!!

The meeting date: the day I'm leaving! Ya gotta be friggin' kiddin me ...... the one topic in 20 years that I actually have an interest in ..... and I'm out of state.

Question: should I book another flight and tell my wife I'll meet her in Arizona Friday?

    Bummer timing bud...

    Hey Curt,

    Didn't realize you were a P.E. ....

Look up in your professional register the name Tennyson Kwok. Tenny is a friend of mine from Disney that recently scored a job as a project manager at Swift Engineering... .... The wired coincidence is that Tenny and my racer buddy Hector used to beat up on each other in Formula Fords in the '70's....

Anyway, will be seeing him at the 'roll-out' debut of the new Swift Formula Atlantics at the Peterson Auto Museum tonight ....

Will ask him if he might be going to your conference back there... If so, and if you go, you'll be able to hang with a guy that might look like a 'mild mannered reporter for the Daily Planet' ... but under that pocket protector beats the heart of a pure kick ass racer..........

    Cheers,

OK, Curt, here's the deal...conduct a Google search of jewelry stores in the destination city. Print out the list and then do a Mapquest deal for all of the GOOD candidates. Then call the hotel and arrange for a (nice) rental car on the day you are absent. Make a copy of all the stuff, insert it into a suitably romantic Valentine card and give it to her tonight over candlelight and soft music. Oh yeah, call VISA and raise the limit.

    Nuthin' to it....

Jim - sounds like you've got some experience at these types of things?

Chuck - the odd part about this is our Chapter meetings are small - maybe 20-30 members at most. This isn't a Statewide meeting or anything. Next month, the speaker will probably be the local Sewer Dept Supervisor ..... Apparently, somebody in our Chapter has a connection. I think Magneti does have a facility in the Detroit-metro area.

    Curt,

Jim has really got the right idea ! From a gal's perspective...you love your wife and she loves you, right? Otherwise why would you bother with an anniversary vacation....I'm guessing your wife loves you for who you are and all your passions...so she will understand if you fly out a day later! Go to the meeting and then arrive on Friday happy and ready for extra special celebrations. Otherwise you'd probably be distracted and down in the mouth because you missed a great speaker. If your lady is smart (and I'm sure she is) she'll know the best way to have a great vacation is to let you go to this meeting. Just raise that CC limit !

Happy anniversary! Ours is next Thursday...

    Cheers,

Lisa and Chuck obviously have NO idea what the temperature is around here!

Head for the sun ASAP!! Get a videotape. I mean c'mon, they're engineers! Some former AV club president MUST be planning a full-on, multi angle shoot.

I'm with JCR. If you told Mr. Fioravante that you missed part of your anniversary-vacation to hear his talk he'd probably throw a few spark plugs at you.
