Diamond in the rough

Not a bad day yesterday at home. I bought a wheel that looked rough (kind words!). I figured it was cheap and I could play at making an R wheel copy. I thought I saw silver peaking out from under that black paint and told myself what if?

Took off the funky hub. Creative fella, I got to give him some credit. By the way the wood was cracked

A little paint stripper...OK, a LOT of stripper and presto!

The leather looked too glossy. It looked like it had been shot with clear.

So, out with the stripper again. Don't worry, safe on leather. I've used it for years removing leather varnish. Won't normally affect dyes, especially vat dyed all the way through.

Michael - You gots to be jokin. I have bought a few wheels that people said were shot, and gol darn it. . . . . .they were right!!!!

Trimmed up the leather at the spokes, conditioned the leather and WOW! It does have some battle scars but nothing major on the front. I was really surprised at the condition of the wrap. Very usable. 82 vintage Nice enough that I'm going to sell my brand new Proto.

Had a shot at one when I picked up my car and I passed on it. Still kicking myself.

Undished Proto with I believe the first iteration of the Proto logo etched at the bottom of the spoke.
