Polishing window frames? 68 frames different?

I just did a 1" test section on my window frame using 400, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit sand paper and was impressed with the mirror like results - no more fine scratches. BUT I noticed that the frame must have some sort of clear coat protection because the outer areas got "foggy" unlike the area I sanded through - flashbacks from when I stripped one fuch. AND I was concerned about sanding through any chrome plating to raw metal. HOWEVER I do recall a few people telling me the 68 door frames are lighter due to the material. SO can someone shed some light in the subject for me?
Is the 68 door frame different from other model years? If I started with a rougher grade to wipe out some of the deeper scratches do I run the risk of going through any plating? I assume that much like polished fuchs a little bit more care will now be involved without the clearcoat. This might be thge excuse I need to scotch brite all the brightwork on the car .

    Bob,

68 was the first year of aluminum. You are removing the anodizing. These are a tough part about these cars. I would love to know someone who can redo these frames as original.

Ray Crawford had his done at Anobrite www.anobrite.com. He says that they are better than new. I'm sure many of you have seen them in person (I have not).

    window frames

It seems that the link to anobrite doesn't work....
Anybody knows if there is a company in Europe that can do (anodize) the window frames and get them back in their original state?

    Thx,

    Cees

I think I am just going to polish mine and not worry about anodizing them. They should be fine without the anodized clearcoat - yeah?

I corrected the link above. It now works.

    Bob-
The anodizing process prevents corrosion, so the trim is more vulnerable without it. It will likely require re-polishing on a regular basis. I understand the temptation, as my door window frames are trashed, but I'm going to hold out for an eventual ano-brite job.
