Need Something Really Cool for a Prize

    Greetings....

A number of community members in Bend (Oregon) are hosting 40+ Marines in May to thank them for the job they do. Along with other events, we're going to take them golfing at Broken Top. The 13th hole there is a par 3 and we are going to offer a Porsche as a hole-in-one prize. I volunteered my '98 C2S in the early stages of the planning last summer, but I have since sold it.

I intend to follow through on my commitment and I could use your help. I'm thinking of buying a car to put up as the prize, and then selling it if there isn't a hole-in-one (I will buy hole-in-one insurance).

What Porsche (within reason, kids - I'd like to keep the budget under $50K) do you think a Marine would consider a cool prize? I'm an old guy, but if were the age of most of these Marines I would like one of the early 911 hot-rods. Do you agree? Or should I be thinking newer (I know, wrong group to ask), like a 996 or somesuch?

    Cheers,
    John Audette

John, You don't know Jarheads very well, do you? Instead of a "superprize" for one of them, they'd probably prefer a lesser prize for ALL of them.

My question is what is the average age for the group? Also what type of cars do they normally drive? Please forgive my ignorance. Being a marketing type, I believe in fitting the prize to the demographic.

Do they go for Saleen Mustangs, Corvettes, Jeeps, 4X4s, SUVs? I would think you would want to taylor the prize to their age range and taste in cars. If they are in their 50s, perhaps an early car would be great, or a Mustang, or a... depending on whether they believe in buying American or if foreign is fine.

Good luck and good work putting it together.

In my first life I was a Golf Pro, ran a small 18 hole course that did allot of tournaments. I gave away at least 8 cars in the 15 years I ran the place.

Make sure the insurance confirmation is in your hand and the yardage is correct, they love to contest the pay off.

A Boxster S. You can get them cheap nowadays. You can get an '04 for less than $35K.
