I have a silver/black 65 911 that I bought about 4 years ago. The gas tank currently in the car started leaking over the winter. It was painted with what appears to be black undercoating. I am replacing the gas tank, and I'm trying to figure out what the factory correct finish is. According to Brett Johnson's 911 and 912 "Restorer's Guide to Authenticity", the tank should be painted gray. I've seen early 911s with the gas tanks painted with various finishes -- gray undercoating, black undercoating, smooth gray paint. Anyone know what the original finish and color was and where that's been documented. Any leads are appreciated! Thanks.
