Extra code near engine code of a 901/02

I just got a incomplete 1968 S engine. I had hoped it would be a Silumin case but it's a late case so it's magnesium. Cool engine though. I did love my old -67 S some 25 years ago....

It has a strange number beside the engine code. I don't remember seing this.

    The engine number is: 4080919
    The engine code is: 901/02
And, there is an additional number near the code: 12986

    A guess anyone?

I have never been able to figure out what those other numbers mean. A production code, perhaps? I have 4 digits under my 901/02 aluminum cased engine, 6225, and it was discussed here before without any resolution as to the meaning.
