2006 Taj Kreuzers Speedfest - Dayton

I just noticed ... this is coming up quick! June 2/4 (edit). Registration is open. Remember, there are a limited # of spots open for the driving tour - sign up for the "Road Warriors Tour" - not the "Covered Bridge Tour".

We need to set up an official motel. What was that place we stayed at last year? Seemed to work good and was central to the activities.

    So who's going this year?

    Curt,

I'm going and thanks for the heads up on the registration, especially the Road Warriors tour. Actually the main event is the first weekend in June. It is 6/2-6/4. There maybe a special guest of the Taj on Thursday night like last year. Dave can fill us in on that if it works out.

    Harry Bieker.

the set i had on last year (not the same set), caught on fire in the middle of the utah desert and were a bit messed up. thankfully halon saved the day and i put it out before major damage was done but the fire was bad enough to make the carbs barely run. barely is the key word though.. i was able to limp it for 3 1/2 hours to vegas.

here is the car after words with a spare set a friend loaned me in vegas.

the carbs from the fire were repaired by a mechanic as only the venturi's looked to messed up (as far as what is necessary for carbs to work, of course the air cleaners were toast). but it still didnt run right with those carbs after the repair, so the borrowed ones went back on to get me back to ohio (which ran fine). they can probably be remanufactured, but i bought this 2nd set and had them done to know for sure that i have a good pair. eventually i'll probably have the burnt ones done the same way so i have a back up set (if bieker deems them remanufactureable).

my now former mechanic who did the tune up a week before the trip (and other prep stuff to make sure it was good to go for the voyage), overtightened the distributor clamp, and threw it out of wack, where the ends were folding on top of eachother. by over tightening it, it was no longer really tight. I had no clue about this until a shop fixing the damage saw the problem. it wasnt somthing that stood out, as i had no reason to look at the distributor.

by the time i got to utah, the vibration of the engine caused the distributor to move enough to retard the timing. it backfired though the carb, and lit up. after the fire was put out i limped to vegas to a friends house.

when i put the loaner carb on in vegas it still ran like crap, which i attributed to being a miss matched set (i only borrowed one carb, and it had different jets than my other carb). a few hours later in barstow the timing retarded enough where it wouldnt run at all and i broke down on the side of the road again. from there i was towed to Jack Stags shop in orange county, where they immediately saw the problem with the loose distributor and saw the clamp and diagnosed teh failure.

a rather large towing bill, shop bill, and bill for new carbs, all over a $9 distributor clamp.
