    Engine numbers

I am looking at a 72 911S that is in very good condition. I actually have not set eyes on the car yet as it is on the opposite side of the country from me. There is an issue with the engine number stamping, it is very light impressions that can not be read completely. Is there any other place on the engine (or anywhere else) where the number might show up? As I mentioned this is a very nice car and is priced accordingly so I am doing my homework. What are the ramifications of not having legible stampings on the engine? As always all input is appreciated.

This sounds very, very odd. Can you post a picture for context?

I will try to get a photo from the owner of the car.

I sent mail to the owner asking him to take a photo of the engine number area on his car so I could see exactly what was there, he mailed back that there was nothing legible to be photographed. So that’s it for that car. Now I am just waiting for the next candidate.

The engine case has been swapped for some reason? What can cause to require to change engine case like this? What % of devaluation of the car value due to no matching# ,but if the engine is period correct S? Thank you for your opinion.

Non-correct engine cases can have a 25% or more devaluation on a car. Correct year 'S' case devluation is much less and an unnumbered case of correct style and vintage should have little to no impact as it can be restamped.
