    ADVICE on how to fit a '65 Wooden steering wheel

    All,

    Tomorrow I'd like to fit a corrrect wooden early 911 steering wheel on one of my '65 911's. It currently incorrectly has a 912 steel/plastic rimmed wheel fitted with the correct non-winged horn ring....similar in fitting and size but incorrect nonetheless.

    ADVICE NEEDED please : how to fit correctly.

    It is possible to turn the horn ring counter clockwise to remove it, but from here I'm a little in the dark as to correct removal and refitting of the wood steering wheel. (from what I can see car and old/new wheel are "factory" original)

    There is a large nut on the steering spline visible once the horn ring is removed and the steering column seems to have a graduated spline to fit the wheel onto.

    Can anyone please confirm the correct method of disassembly of the old wheel and attachment of the orignal (similar) corrrect wood rimmed wheel.

    Steering- yeah, is probably pretty important and not something I want to get wrong.......

    Cheers and thanks

    Straighten the wheel, then put a couple marks on the steering column that correlate to similar parts ( the wheels are the same other than the materials aren't they ?) of the new wheel so you can position the wheel in the same attitude.
    Hold onto the wheel and take off the 27mm nut .
    Take off the wheel. Note the spring and bushing placement.
    Put the spring and bushing on the new/old wheel in the same way it was on the orig wheel.
    Put on the new/old wheel and put the nut back on ( Don't let the wheel turn as you tighten the nut)
    It doesn't have to be exact, but if you are driving straight and the wheel is crooked, reposition it.

    It isn't difficult, I was able to do it.

    Good luck;
    John
