Need Advice re Houndstooth and Tony

After reading all the good things about Tony at Autobahn Interiors I decided to send him my sport seats. He has some Houndstooth material that is wool and German but not original. He said the black somewhat bleeded into the white so that the material is grayish. He said it looked real nice and he is sending me a sample. My question is this. I need a yard of material. My car will never be a concours champion (too many original low mileage ones out there) but I want it to be as nice as I can make it. Do I go with his material at $90 a yard or scrounge some original material somewhere. Someone had some on Ebay that did not meet the reserve which I believe was $500 a yard. By the way Tony seemed like a real good person and my seats are going to be shipped to him this week. His prices are very good too.

I'd rather shove sticks in small orifices than pay $500/yd for ANY fabric, unless it is woven gold. If you aren't going to go 100 points with the car, this kind of luxury is for the wealthy and/or anal retentive. That said, I'd love a set of original houndstooth seats!

If you look at what these are worth done correctly I would get correct material.

    Houndstooth seats.

Hello: What I would do is use the non original stuff and drive the car. These cars are alot of fun to drive so drive it. If you are worried about the rivets from your Levi's tearing the seats then you won't drive the car. I've built cars for people who want a perfect car and then they don't drive them. I'd rather have a car with some stone chips and dirty floor mats that I can jump in and drive anytime. I've also been known to leave the car dirty for a week as well. Have fun and drive the car! Thanks Eric

The fabric you describe sounds like it's from the batch that Larry Chester made up. I know Autos Intn'l bought some from him. It really looks great in his car. I would use it unless you intend to concours. Search the forum for "houndstooth" or "kermit" and you will probably find some pics.

Yes, the fabric Tony has is from Larry.

    Here's a pic of Larry's seats.

    Fabric

I contacted the factory in Germany (classic department) and they told me to contact Sitzklinik.de and they where supposed to have original fabric. I ordered enough for two sports seats (middle part). It was 136 Euro pr. meters if I don’t remember wrong.

So is Autobahn Interiors a good place to have seats re-done?
Is his labor reasonably priced or is he the best quality?

Ok, just passing on what I know so far....

Did you get a clipping of the fabric before you ordered??

My understanding from Robert Gross is that the fabric they have is single strand fiber, not a double strand fiber like OE.

I imported OE Houndstooth from Porsche classic many years ago, and I also have a set of NOS Houndstooth seat covers.

I sent a clipping of "my" old OE stuff to Robert, and he said it's different from the Sitzklinik fabric.

Just thought I would mention it....

I'm still waiting for my Sitzklinik swatch to compare.
