I noticed that , in colder weather my speedometer makes a clicking noise and occ does not register.
Anyone know what's up with that ?
Thanks;
John

John, it sounds to me like a gear going bad in your speedo...or it could be cable lube getting stiff in the cold weather. If you ever send your speedo to N. Hollywood order a new cable as well.

I found a Pelican thread that said you could check if the cable was the prob by disconecting it and driving the car ? Can I do that with the speedo out and the cable through the hole or do I need to put someone in the trunk?

Remove the gauge...it simply pulls out of the dash in a 1971. You're lucky there. Be sure to label which light plug goes where. Unscrew the cable from the speedo, go for a drive. If you still hear the clicking, it's the cable. If no clicking, gears in the speedo. My reasoning behind suggesting you order a new one if you send the speedo in is to make everything "new". N. Hollywood made a new speedo cable for me for not much money. Trying to remember the cost, but can't...something like $35? The removal & install isn't fun, but doable by a home wrench if he has jackstands & a helper...the worst part is running the new cable through the center tunnel. Easier if on a lift, but can be done with jackstands.

As I mentioned in another post, I just did this today. There's nothing technical about it - but it is a hassle, even on a lift. As Paul says, the challenge is getting the new cable through the tunnel.
One interesting thing that I ran into is that the original cable had a rubber sheath around it in two sections and the new cable had no sheath. I suppose it was there to prevent rattling so I reinstalled it on the new cable by slicing it with a razor blade and taping it to the new cable. Of course that makes it even harder to get it through the tunnel, but it can be done with two people and patience.

Sorry John, Yep...a LOT more work to remove the gauges in a '67...small hands help.

Well since I'll be under and in there to work on the pedals and to put in a dual master cyl. I'll swap the cables and then if it the prob doesn't go away I'll move on to the speedo.
It happens only rarely now so I can get by this driving season and then I'll see what projects come up for the winter.
