Pretty great to see a Lightweight, or any RS for that matter, still with its original owner.

    Dealer Description:

The Cultivated Collector’s 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, Chassis 0802, is one of 1,308 produced “M472” Touring specification cars, and is considered one of the very best examples of the Carrera 2.7 RS today. 0802 would find itself first owned by Prince Max Emanuel von Thurn & Taxis, who was a member of the noble German Thurn & Taxis family. During the 14th-17th centuries, his family would gain notoriety and a place amongst the German aristocracy by building many of the prolific castles in the Bavarian region, and further cementing their legacy by transitioning to operating the postal service as well as numerous breweries. Prince Max Emanuel would enjoy 0802 for one year before the car would be sold and subsequently change ownership five times over the next few years, ultimately landing in the stewardship of Gottfried Kadach in 1989.

Mr. Kadach would prove to be an ideal caretaker for 0802, as he was not only highly respected within the Porsche racing world as the owner of Kadach Porsche-Tuning & Service, but he was also a renowned Porsche restorer. During Mr. Kadach’s stewardship, 0802 would receive no shortage of love and appreciation, undergoing a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration to its original specifications. In 2006, after 17 years of stewardship, Mr. Kadach would relinquish ownership of 0802, seeing the car move West to the United Kingdom with its new owner. Immediately upon landing in the UK, renowned marque specialists Export 56 were tapped to tackle a painstaking list of mechanical and cosmetic points to be addressed on 0802, with the goal being to bring the car as close to perfection as possible. The result of this work would allow 0802 grace the cover of the June 2007 issues of both 911 & Porsche World and Speedster magazines. A few years later, in December of 2011, 0802 was serviced by Porsche specialists Maxted-Page and Prill Limited, with the car being destined for US shores shortly after work was completed.

Today 0802 retains its original, numbers-matching engine and gearbox, while being cloaked in its original “Licht Gelb” paint over black leatherette interior and it presents as one of the best of the breed - a car with high integrity, no stories, and extensive historical documentation. Complete with a COA issued by Porsche, as well as restoration photographs and documentation from Kadach, 0802’s accompanying files thoroughly document the lineage of this spectacular Porsche. For those enthusiasts seeking a true driving nirvana experience to add to their garage, look no further than our 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS.

    Dealer Description:

    - Matching numbers, early 2.7 RS Touring (M472)
    - One of only 71 cars delivered in striking Viper Green
    - Period race history including Giro d’Italia
    - In outstanding, restored condition and well documented
    - With original toolkit, compressor, original seats and 2 spare Fuchs wheels

Our car, #0671 - an early 2nd series car - was delivered in striking Viper Green in February 1973 with engine nr 6630680 and gearbox nr 7830667 to its first Italian owner Emilio Encole of Milan. With two subsequent Milanese owners, it was then purchased by Como-based Flavio Vigano who used the car from 1977 to 1979 in various Italian races and hill climbs with excellent results (see the History section below).

Over the next 15 years, the car passed through several Italian owners all of which are known and documented until it was bought in 2002 by Marcello Medici who ordered a full restoration of the car by the best Italian craftsmen and specialists: Cremonini for the bodywork and paint, Biasseti for the mechanicals and Ferraresi for the interior (an extensive picture file of the restoration comes with the car). When the restoration was finished Mr Medici coveted his 2.7 RS and - during his 10 year ownership - occasionally showed it in various Porsche Italy concours events. In 2013, we brokered the sale of #0671 to its prior owner who used the car sparingly while in his Austrian vacation residence.

#0671 is one of only 71 Porsche 2.7 RS delivered in Viper Green and is in outstanding cosmetic and mechanical condition. Being an early chassis-number it has the thin gauge steel thereby shaving 38 kg of the car’s weight. The VIN-plate, chassis number and production number are all present and authentic with matching engine and gearbox. Ideally suited for the road and/or the occasional tarmac rally, the car also has an Halda tripmaster installed together with a navigator flexible light-bulb.

The car has just undergone a restoration of its interior including its original Recaro and back seats, new door trim and carpets. It comes with excellent documentation including an original RS Owners Manual (German), Supplement and red pouch, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. A copy of the original factory Kardex is also present including the engine dyno test sheet which is quite rare. In addition to its old Italian and Austrian road registration documents, there is also a spare front and rear Fuchs wheel in freshly restored, as-new condition.

This is an outstanding early example of the famous "Ducktail" 2.7 RS Touring in striking Vipe Green which is a pleasure to drive and is ready to be cherished and enjoyed by its next privileged custodian.

    Auction Description:

    - Believed to be one of only 200 examples produced for 1973 in factory “Lightweight” configuration
    - Benefitting from single ownership since new
    - Matching-numbers chassis, engine, and transmission
    - Finished in factory-correct Light Yellow over black

Though the FIA requirement was pegged at only 500 examples for Group 4 homologation, demand pushed Porsche to produce 1,580 units of the 911 RS 2.7 in 1973. A mere 200 were ordered through the factory for “M471”-specification Lightweight conversion, making the example offered here rare indeed. The current and sole owner of this exceptional example claims to have read contemporary road tests when the model was new, and was struck by its instant appeal. Though the long-term owner initially struggled to source a car easily through an importer in their domestic Italy, they travelled to Germany to take a Porsche from its homeland. The dealership Auto-Dunker GmbH, based out of Aschaffenburg, near Frankfurt, were able to oblige and so the car offered for sale here was ordered in April 1973.

The options list extended to “M471” (Lightweight specification), with “M458”—a headrest for the front seats. On an additional document from the dealer, the original order also included “M489” for seatbelts, “M462” for Carrera livery applied on the side of the car, and “M220” for limited-slip differential. The 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight left the factory finished—as it is today—in Light Yellow over a black interior. The original German pflegepass—or service book—is first dated 12 July 1973 and is included as part of the sale, along with the original dealer invoice and sales documents. Furthermore, an air compressor, a spare wheel and tire, tools, and an extra set of wheels are present with the car.

Over the long years of sole ownership, the owner personalised the Porsche with items such as the black finish on the exterior mirror to replace the chrome alternative, and on a more practical level, the two rubber straps that lock the rear engine lid were deteriorating regularly due to the heat of the engine, so they have been replaced by the commonly found “M472” lock. Remarkably well preserved and thought to be highly original—and cherished by a single owner from new—this rare 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight with matching-numbers chassis, engine and transmission is an exceptional find for any Porsche enthusiast.

    Dealer Description:

This particular car is not only a genuine lightweight, it is from the first 500 units of production, making it one of the cars that actually contributed to the homologation of the Carrera RS for racing. These early cars differed in detail compared to later cars. For example, there is no pebbled finish on the underside of the front deck lid or on the structural elements in the engine compartment, both of which are correctly finished on this superbly restored example. Also of note is that this car is one of only a handful of Lightweights fitted with a sunroof from the factory. This information is confirmed by the entry in the seminal Konradsheim book. Also of note is that this car was supplied to the current owner by Dr. Georg Konradsheim, and he produced a fantastic book about this car specifically. It details the history and obsessive restoration of this car and comes in a slip cover to match the well-known RS book which he published, a must-own for any RS enthusiast. The book which was made to document this car includes images of many early documents, including some production documents, old ownership documents, and certificate confirming the car’s original colors (Gulf orange on black), numbers, and options. Naturally, the originals of these documents are included with the car as is the book, tools, and owner’s manual pack, as well as the original butterfly horn pad. The car is in excellent shape, having been used carefully since the restoration and showing only minor wear and aging since. Total number of owners is unknown.

    Auction Description:

    - Among the Finest of the 200 Carrera RS Lightweights Built
    - Desirable First-Series Example Delivered New to France
    - Retains Matching-Numbers Engine and Transaxle per Factory Records
    - Faithfully Presented in Sensational Original Seeblau Livery
    - Restored by RS Specialist Nate Cantwell for Porsche Collector Dr. Richard Moran
    - Exhibited at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®

This first-series M471 Lightweight, chassis 9113600476, was built in January 1973 and originally finished in Seeblau (code 4848), also known as Oxford or Dalmatian Blue. According to Dr. Georg Konradsheim and Dr. Thomas Gruber’s definitive book, Carrera RS, only 55 examples of the RS 2.7 were delivered new in this handsome shade of blue, one of the most attractive Porsche colors offered for 1973. Factory records confirm that this car was lightly optioned, with just Pirelli tires, black leatherette upholstery, and head restraints noted.

One of only 67 examples delivered new to France, the Carrera RS remained in single-family ownership until 1989, when it was sold to well-known collector and racer Jean Guikas of Marseille. After passing through several owners in Europe and the US, the Lightweight was acquired by noted Porsche collector Dr. Richard Moran of Irvine, California. A well-known name in Porsche circles, Dr. Moran was among the first to recognize the significance of these rare homologation specials and, at one point, owned a Carrera RS in nearly every color built. A discerning collector, he sought out only the highest-quality examples – cars like this first-series Lightweight – which still retained its matching-numbers engine and transaxle, as well as its rare M471-specific components.

Given this car’s rare original color scheme and genuine character, Dr. Moran commissioned Nate Cantwell, one of the world’s foremost Carrera RS authorities, to restore this car to its original, as-delivered condition. During this process, the Porsche was stripped to bare metal, revealing the body’s original lightweight sheet metal and factory welds. All aspects of the restoration were completed to the highest standards, with tremendous attention to detail throughout – from fitting proper French headlamps, to sourcing correct date-coded Repa seat belts, and period-correct Pirelli CN36 tires.

The Lightweight was invited to make its post-restoration debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® in August 2013 for the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 celebration.

Under the current ownership, the RS 2.7 Lightweight has benefited from regular maintenance, detailing, and exercise. It remains in show-quality condition and is sure to impress even the most critical collector with its outstanding presentation and performance. Accompanying the sale is a set of proper French-language handbooks, a tool roll, jack, keys, spare assembly, and car cover.

Arguably the most iconic and sought-after Porsche of all time, the Carrera RS 2.7 is the definitive high-performance sports car of its generation – a model that laid the foundation for Porsche’s dominance of GT racing, and which has served as the inspiration for every top-of-the-line 911 built since 1973. Despite its enduring legacy, rarely does a Carrera RS of exceptional quality appear for sale, let alone a first-series M471 Lightweight such as this, which possesses matching-numbers components, a rare factory-color scheme, and concours quality restoration commissioned by a respected collector and overseen by one of the foremost experts in the field.
