The 'Carrera RS' was the first true 'client-competition' version of the 911 and is still considered to be one of the best 911s ever built. To develop this version, the constructor relied on a tried and tested formula: reducing the weight and increasing the power. Aesthetic modifications, such as wider rear wheel arches to accommodate larger wheels and a rear 'duck tail' spoiler made their appearance. For the interior, clients could choose between 'Touring' trim similar to the 911 S production model, or 'Lightweight' trim, which was stripped out to reduce the weight further. The final number built exceeded 1500, well above the 500 initially planned to gain GT homologation. Building on this incredible success, the model evolved to incorporate new features, in line with racing regulations, maintaining the 'client-competition' tradition that few other marques have been able to match as consistently.
The 2.7 RS that we are presenting has several unique qualities. As its Porsche certificate indicates, it was delivered new in Germany on 8 January 1973 in one of the rarest colours: Aubergine (ref. 4040) with a black headlining (ref. 025). Only 16 RS models were delivered in this colour. Its engine, no. 6630402, is the one with which it left the factory, fitted to chassis no. 0377. It is thus one of the first 500 built, with a lighter body due to the use of thin-gauge steel.
This iconic model of the marque has been in the hands of the son of one of the greatest French collectors, who registered it on 20 January 2005, acquiring it from another leading Porsche collector, Jean-Claude Miloé. M. Miloé had himself purchased the car from Jean-Patrick Flandé, who kept it for a good ten years and drove it for some 90.000 km. He had bought it in Switzerland in the mid-1980s. Since then, it has been maintained by Valentin Kaiser, the widely known manager of the Porsche Classic Center in Paris. He rebuilt the engine when the car was owned by M. Flandé, and at the same time the 16in wheels were fitted and improvements made to the oil system. The current owner had the original seats (which will be supplied with the car) replaced by more heavily bolstered Recaro seats offering increased comfort. He told us that he had never driven the car on track, using it only to travel to his family home in the Sologne or for leisure trips. In very good condition, well maintained and fitted with its original engine, this is one of only 16 2.7 RS Tourings finished in 'Aubergine' and one of the first 500 built. A rare find for any lover of the make and model!
