As I understand it, there's a clear legal difference. Sotheby's make representations about artworks in their catalogues which they are liable for if they prove to be false. Their related company RM Sotheby's explicitly disclaims any responsibility for cars not being as described. The following is taken from the Bidders' terms & conditions for their Monterrey sale:

    5. All Sales are “As Is” and “Where Is.” The Bidder is responsible for inspections and verification of condition, authenticity, and completeness of any lot purchased. No warranties or representations of any type whatsoever are made by RM. Statements printed in catalogues, brochures, signs, and window cards, as well as verbal statements made by auctioneers or auction staff, are representations made by the consignor, and RM has no obligation to verify or authenticate any such claims or representations. Any announcements made at the time of sale supersede any earlier printed information. Except as herein provided, all lots are sold as is, where is, with no representations or warranties, expressed or implied. THE CONSIGNOR AND RM DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, AS TO CONDITION, ORIGINALITY, OR AUTHENTICITY; ORIGIN OR PROVENANCE; PREVIOUS USE OR OWNERSHIP; MANUFACTURING OR RESTORATION PROCESSES; YEAR OR AGE; SERIAL NUMBER, MAKE, OR MODEL; OPTIONS AND TOOLS; ENGINE HOURS; AND MILEAGE OF ANY LOT OR COMPONENT OF ANY LOT, AND THEY SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ANY WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

We are also different to the usa regarding auction houses, most in the uk go to auction for other reasons unlike the usa where most are sold at auction.

I feel like with a real 73 RS, a fire extinguisher would be a sound investment. Shocking loss.

The auction site has a link to a prior sale ad on this car with some history:

9113601182 is one of only 3 Carrera RSs originally shipped to the U.S. It was the first to arrive, and was the only car in black. This 472 Touring version was sent to the US in April 1973, and after arriving at the St. Louis port it was delivered to it first owner, Porsche racer and dealership owner, Art Bunker of Kansas City, MO. He would own the car until the early 80s when the RS was sold to a collection in Japan. In the 90s Porsche expert and automotive historian, Jean Pierre Cornu would purchase the car from the collection and ship the RS to France. Cornu would then sell the car to Claudio Roddaro of Monaco, and it lived in Monte Carlo until purchased by Canepa. This is a very original car except for one exterior repaint in its original black. It has numbers matching engine and transmission, and original factory sports seats. This Carrera RS captures the impossible combination of eminent drivability, total practicality, and huge fun. Few cars have ever, or will ever, match its ability to dominate at the track and then take you safely back home. Porsche Options: 102 Heated rear window 409 Sport seats left and right leather 423 Driver side outside mirror 441 Electric antenna with four speakers 482 Engine compartment lighting 549 Belts 3 points left and right 569 Shock bumpers -

    Listing says "Chassis 911 360 1316".

If anyone wants what is listed as 1316 "of only 500 cars built" and if prospective buyer doesn't mind the fact the bodyshell, engine and transmission have all said to have been "replaced", then this could be the very thing ...

Listing says "this example has had a replacement body shell and the engine and the gearbox which is a Porsche Factory exchange item have been replaced"

Listing also mentions ..."Chassis 911 360 1316" which IIRC is a much discussed automobile here and elsewhere on the www ...

I would love to see the VIN stamping of this car. I have a picture of the original VIN stamping but a completely different car. That one has no resemblance with a M472 RS so it could be that the original 1316 was stripped totally and most of the parts went into the red one.
