I have tried to explain to auction house RM Sotheby’s specialist copy writers over glass of wine that the correct term is M471 Sport not “lightweight”. Tried to explain why it has potential to mislead in context tk how homologation really happened for the Carrera RS. They hadn’t appreciated the nuances. But still using colloquial term lightweight still unable to comprehend the distinction. Hopefully when they finally get around completing the description they can gets this fundamental point right but at least (vin 573) an earlyish second series would have had the base Carrera RS homologation specification chassis at the core so less
    Potential to mislead / confuse.

With premium it was euro 713,750. I watched it live, bidding stalled out several times, at one point it was nearly hammered (no reserve) at I think euro 450!

A few strong results in the auction but it felt like a number of lots underwhelmed. Matching numbers Bugatti Type 57 cabriolet for example, "with some recommissioning required," sold for half the high estimate and far below any similar recent sale.

Has steering wheel been inflated perhaps as homage to Bibendum man being French ?

Shan’t comment on the other (recent) changes other than to say much preferred it when Sepia M472 with the S bumper as used France market for RS … even with the bumperettes
    IMG_2612.jpeg

Regarding the old photo it’s a bit faded but shouldn’t a French car have had the distinctive yellow H4 headlight set-up specified for that market in that era ?

I see the original steering wheel, front bumper with overriders included in the sale amongst other things but possibly not the original damaged cases Steve. Lots of sepia showing which might indicate originality but I wonder if it still retains its original thinner panels all round. Maybe the headlights faded in that picture or replaced with clear lenses along the way. Looks a very interesting RS and would look superb in sepia. Only ever seen one in the flesh and I really liked it. Rare too, I would put it back to original. Pity about the engine otherwise it might have been sympathetically retuned to a really top matching numbers example.

RS's in sepia are pretty cool indeed. Best feature of this RS is the distinct throttle pedal!

Agree Mike Sepia if well presented can look stunning. Originally it would have had this headlamp part, unique to French market

Like the additional stamp on vin area and other things like S bumper was required by prevailing national regulations in that country at the time so it looks right on French cars and aesthetically pleasing if resonated in combination with the auxiliary lamps and ideally back to original colour of Sepia.

My 1972/73 spare parts maroon binder print date 9/72 (September of 72) with supplementary page edition ii (shown top left) is reasonably contemporary with this example being an early first 500 series RS launched early October 72. Early example centrally in the range up to vin 0319 known to have been completed to original first series special lighter in weight homologation specification for core chassis that the factory recorded as having build completed before the end of calendar 1972.
    IMG_6787.jpg
Source is the factory technical specifications booklet 72/73 (presumably this means 309 examples of model 73 RS were made before December 31 1972 if more correctly start the count from vin 9113600011 due to first ten chassis of a new model being reserved for development purposes )
