I have a document from the factory, circa the 70's. It indicates that the thin sheet metal started to run out for most panels around chassis #1036. That's doesn't mean that 1036 was the last RS with the thin gauge steel - certain panels ran out before others, but the cut-off was round that chassis number. It's really easy to see/know the difference - a little pressure with a well-placed thumb will tell you if you've got thin or normal gauge steel.

The thin gauge steel was used on M472 and M471 bodies, the factory did not differentiate between these. I think there is a lot of confusion because the m471 is referred to as a 'Lightweight' and the M472 as a 'Touring.' Both both bodies received the thin gauge steel until supplies were exhausted.....

Before these were considered collector cars it was great fun to dig into everything that made these tick. It was incredibly difficult to get detailed information in the pre-www days like you can now with a few key strokes. The downside is.. simply "Money changes everything". I'm so glad I was able to own a couple of these and run them really hard before they were worth so much I no longer dared. Guys buying them today aren't looking for a wonderful enthusiast car, most are thinking "investment". I can't wait for the next crash. [Yes. It will come. Unfortunately, the prices have risen so high that even a major "adjustment" won't get the prices low enough for mere mortals to play with them again. The good part? Any decent 69-74 can be easily built to the same feel and performance level for a somewhat reasonable price. [That '74 wasn't a typo. But that is a discussion for another time and place. That represents "the enthusiast's secret".]

As far as the late, relatively heavy, RS being advertised as a "Lightweight", for sure! I have seen that for many years. It's all about.. MONEY and EGO.

There's a lot in this statement.

    Nice one, John...

    Hi SP,

I will second this request. Could you scan these RS ordering documents and post them up? Or if not could you send them over in an email? Would really enjoy seeing these. Thanks.
