    Tearin down alternator

Trying to separate the danged fan from the alternator is making me nuts. I don't want to use excessive force as all appears salvagable for the upcoming project (home brew lightweight street machine). Neither the alternators thru bolts to the housing nor the fan want to separate from either. Been dusting everything with a wd40 type product for a year and still no better reception to mild force. If anyone can kick a brotha in the right direction on this thing I'd appreciate it.

edit: is there a special tool like a wheel puller that must be used? thanx

    Fan and alternator removal.

Paul: To remove the fan and alternator assemble you first remove the fan and alternator from the housing. What I do is put the nuts back on the alternator through bolts, but just over the ends of the bolts to protect the threads. Next use a wood or hard plastic hammer to hit the nuts you left on. Hitting the nuts across from each other till it comes loose. Remove the nuts then carefully tap the bolt ends till the fan and alternator come out together. After the fan is out use wood blocks under the fan and again use the fan nut to protect the threads on the alternator and tap out with a hammer. Warning use light pressure in all steps of this or you will break the fan, housing and alternator. If it still will not come loose you may put the assemble in a oven at 200 degrees and try again. Good luck and go slow. If it does not work one day have a beer or two and try again tomorrow. Thanks Eric

About five years ago I replaced the original alt on a 67 normale. It had welded itself to the housing. Took half a day of torching to free it. Cooked the crap out of the alt. I have a SC housing with a Valeo that I was after. Having the same problem. Guess my ebay win is a wash. :-(

Ok, so it's not just me being an infantile trying to yank a square peg from a round hole...those suckers really do weld themselves together. I can't get the bolts from the alternator to release from the main housing but will try some mild heat next time around. For a while there I was beginning to believe I lack some pretty simple skills....lol.

    Fan assemble in housing.

Hello: After you clean everything up, I use some grease on the outside of the alternator where it goes into the housing so next time you can get it apart. Go slow on this project and all will be fine. The hitting with a soft hammer will help alot to loosen the alternator in the housing. If you use heat from a torch be careful since magnesium will melt and go on fire. Also with the heat you can cool it then reheat it. You can also use a hydraulic press by using Light pressure then come back later to see if has moved as well. This job does take time but it is better to go at it slowly then have to buy another assemble since some of these parts are NLA. Thanks Eric
