Exclamation OEM Tire Size for 1969 911S

    Guys,

I must get some tires asap and left my papers at home... what was the original size on the 69S? I'm thinking of going with Vredesteins Sprint Classics (if I can find them). Any other recs for stock(ish) looking tires?

    Thanks much, Juan

I am 99% sure the 185 Vredesteins would be correct. They handle amazingly, too. That said, I think you can get the correct Michelin XWX rubber from Coker Tire, too. They aren't cheap, but they are V rated:

    Original equipment size was 185/70-15.

XWX Michelins are available ($287 apiece) from Coker as are CN36 Pirelli's which may be more difficult to access..

I was pleasantly surprised by the Vredestein Sprint Classics. I love the look and was interested to see how my car handled when new from the factory with these 'skinny tires'. I was anticipating something akin to driving in the rain after running modern 50-series tires for years. Not true at all. They feel just right.

I'll second that. They are also reasonably priced compared to the alternatives. You will also be pleasantly surprised by how well your car drives in the stock configuration. The conventional wisdom considers stock sized tires to be borderline dangerous. The suspension was engineered around this size tire, and you will be surprised how well they perform, even when pushed.

ditto the Vredesteins, have a new set and really like them and they have original tread design > very close to the much more expensive Michellin.

Juan - I've verified today that 2 of my Vredesteins are simply out-of-round and cannot be balanced properly. Not sure if I just got 2 bad ones, or if the manufacturing tolerances in general are poor. In any case, it causes a significant vibration problem at high-speed.

One other option for 185/70-15 I've come across is the Avon CR66 ZZ. It's an FIA rally tire with DOT approval. They're available in the US for about $200 each.

Thanks for the heads up Curt. I've had that problem before with Dunlops and some Yoko's I don't drive the cars enough. Its been suggested that I should overinflate prior to storage.
