Nut on top of shock (front)

I unscrewed the nut on top of the strut tower/shock absorber tower in the front luggage compartment, I am not sure what the correct expression is in English. Is this nut some kind of locking nut and if not is there a correct torque that should be used?

    Thanks
    John

The original nut had a washer with an inside tab that fit the shock shaft so it wouldn't turn. A lock nut wouldn't be a bad idea except for the amount of effort it takes to hold the shaft and unscrew the nut. With an impact wrench, this is not a problem. However, when an impact is used, the nut coes off a a high speed, some of the holding power gets lost due to heat and friction. Impact guns and lock nuts are not friends.

The nut pobably does have a torque value, but I don't have it handy. The nut tightens to the sleeve inside the rubber bushing (if your car is stock) and good and snug has always done it for me. I'm talking maybe 30 ft/lbs. There is no particular reason it should come undone, but you don't want it to at any cost, so do what is necessary for your safety.
