    10mm stud on 1968 911L steering rack

Wonder if any one can help me identify the purpose of a 1omm stud that protrudes from the body of a steering rack for a 1968 L. I have another steering rack for a 1966 912 with the same stud but the 1968 912 that I have does not have the stud. Anybody know what it's purpose is? I have a rebuilt steering rack w/o the stud and want to make sure I don't regret installing it. Many thanks.

That stud might be for the steering damper, which was installed on the very early cars.
