Thread: Identify 930 tentioners or Carrera Tensioners?

Identify 930 tentioners or Carrera Tensioners?

How can I identify if there has been performed an upgrade to 930 tentioners with collars or Carrera Tensioners on my 911/53 engine? (or is there other upgrade alternatives?)

    Thanks for all the help

    John:

If you don't see lines like this running to your cam boxes it is unlikely that you have the conversion. It's pretty easy to spot.

To determine if you have 930 tensioners with collars you will have to take the cam box covers off. Remove the muffler and sheetmetal that is bolted to the cam boxes and take them off. 10mm nylock nuts and aluminum washers.

    Good luck,

    Tom

You can't tell if a car has the 930 tensioners without removing the chainbox covers. That said, you can tell easily if the car has Carrera tensioners. If the chainbox covers have oil ines going into them, they are Carrera tensioners, unless your car is really, REALLY early and has center oiled cams (then the lines are the lube lines for the early Solex cams).

(EDIT) AHA, thanks sithot. Perfect picture.

    You're welcome.

BTW, I double dare you to come to the Shenandoah Valley Rally next month! Fly into Dulles and I'll pick you up. Bring more West Coast reprobates with you as well.

    Best,

    Tom

You laugh! I had to pass on a conference in DC in the upcoming weeks. I might have been there!

I do not have the Carrera upgrade, the picture you posted made it very easy to identify. I will remove the covers and have a look inside. How do I tell the difference inside between the original and the 930 upgrade? If I dont have a upgrade at all, should I do one?

I tried to find photos of both types of tensioers in my books, but haven't had any luck, specifically in finding photos of the 930 tensioners or collars. Perhaps a search on Pelican would yeild some photos?

I followed your tip Kenikh and you where right. I have posted the pics below but I am not sure what the second picture is showing, is that part also part of the upgrade?
