    Nurburgring transmission?

Anyone ever hear of this? A friend is looking at a 69 911S and the owner says it has this special "Nurburgring transmission". I never heard of it.

    901 gearing

Hello: The gear ratios are 1st 14:37,2nd 20:32,3rd 22:29,4th 25:27,5th 27:25 or by letter are B,HA,M,R,V. If it has these ratios it will be more of a race box with a short drop of rpm's between shifts. The stock box is A,F,M,S,Z which is nice as well. They may just be using the name to sell the car (wink wink). Hope this helps. Thanks Eric

If that box is original to the car, it's pretty special. You didn't order those gear ratios for driving to work and back. It should have a 901/54 type designation. The tall first with the 2.0 must be a bear around town.

The Nurburing was a tranny gear set-up that was referenced in the sports purpose handbooks I think. Porsche also had airport, hillclimb and other race circuit gearboxes. Do a search and you can find information on gearing. I can send you a link if need be.

Can I correct a typo in the tfiv post above.

A ’69 911S could have come with one of two transmissions with “Nuerburgring ratios.”

The ‘69 aluminum die cast housing was a Type 901/79. It would have serial number in the range: 7394001 to 7394008.

The ’69 magnesium pressure cast housing was 901/84. It would have serial number in the range: 7394101 to 7394109.

It should be easy to tell if this ’69 911S has original Factory Nuerburgring ratios knowing the unique serial numbers

The switch from aluminum to magnesium was about 30% through the ’69 street production.

A 901/54 was the same ratios but available for ’67 911S only and ’68 911all. It would have serial numbers in the range: 9284001 to 9284999 (not that they ever built that many).

All of these transmissions were geared: B-HA-M-R-V.

    Best,
    Grady

Wow, thank you all for the info. I knew someone here would know. I'll pass it on to my friend who's looking at the 69. He's a good guy and this should be a big help to him. Thanks again.
