Anyone know what this does? (PIC)

Pulled the interior completely out of my 71 S today and noticed two non factory red wires coming from the dash and running to the engine compartment via the shifter tunnel. On the dash, there was this red very period looking push button that blended in with all the other switches (reason I never noticed it before) with one wire running to the fuse box for power and the other to a soleniod on top of the fuel filter (see pic). I vaguely remember the original owner telling me about the switch having to do with starting the car, but that was 18 years ago and I never had to use it. Any ideas on how this works? Thanks Allan

That is a "driver" operated MFI cold start solenoid.

Usually these are operated via a thermal/time switch but you car has been modified to be operated by the driver.

The wire on top of your solenoid used to be connected to the engine harness and then to the time switch but now is wire to a switch on your dash.

This mod and the cold start in general is subject of much debate. Do a search and you can for you own opinion on how you want to proceed. Remove, keep, restore to original...

I installed the same mod on my car after my thermal/time switch went south. I place the key in the accessory position (you can hear the fuel pump running) press the switch for a count of 3, release, and hit the ignition. It works for me, but then one man's works are anothers...

I ran mine disconnected and plugged with no ill effects, plus I think it only kicks in when temps are much colder than a you know what...... I suppose pushing a small dowel pin inside the hose and hooking it back up will disable it while retaining the stock look.
