Thread: '67 911S or Torsion bars again?

  1. #11
Oh man... I took the pedal off, mayby that's why I was having problems.

I've been doing some thinking and I don't want to restore the car back to bone-stock. I wouldn't have fun with a $50k+ completly sanitary '67S. I do enjoy and admire those pristine examples though.

I like that fact that it was raced and I would like to continue doing that with the car. It's just going to be a fine balancing act between safety/racing modifications and being able to turn the car back to stock for the next guy.

The challenges I face tracking the car are:

    1) The current Autopower rollbar. I don't like how it mounts to the floorpan. It would be much safer if it mounted to the sills. A full cage would be best as I do want to run HSR/VARA.

    2) Oil cooler. It was 70 degrees outside and the temp gauge was reading 120C

    3) Bodywork. I'd like the keep the LWB flares on the rear except maybe change them so they look a little more "custom". If you look through that picture thread you see a lot of different flare shapes. 911R bumpers bolt on and off as do doors, hoods, and decklids. I just want her to look period correct. No front spoiler and no ducktail.

    4) Those sport seats must be made from cast iron. I need a modern shell in there so I can get better support and more room in the Z-Axis. Losing a few pounds will help too (me and the seats)

    5) Fire system. I'd have to have some sort of problem and the car burn to the ground.

Other than that I think the stock brakes are fine. Engine and trans seem to be in good health. The suspension is in need of some serious rehabilatation. New bushings/dampers/springs are in order big time.

    What do you guys think?
    Torsion Bar Impaired... again.

I'll take a shot at it.

    1) If the car is street driven the cage is out, unless you plan to wear a brain bucket. What me speeding officer? That being said, a bolt-in modern cage is an excellent idea, reversible someday.

    2) Here's where the R touch comes in: double coolers in the front of each wheelwell with R-style black hardlines connecting the two in the trunk. Very, very period and could bring temps down to a nice 180.

    3) A hammer and dolly in the hands of an experienced metal man could work wonders at extending those flares out.

    4) Agree, and get a modern shell that can accomodate your HANS device and a seat back brace that ties into the cage.

    5) AFFF systems are cheap and can be electrically fired.

I would go through the stock suspension and be particularly cautious about the ball joints. 911's didn't have dual-circuit brake systems until 1968, for track use an upgrade to a dual circuit m/c is a must and not that pricey. Since you're changing the m/c you might as well get a complete front suspension from a Carrera with the thicker rotors and bolt that up. Watch the brake bias. 23/31 with custom Bilsteins and Elephant polybronze bushings with a set of Weltmeister SWB adjustable springplates.

And top it off with one thick coat of Light Ivory 6604!
