Thread: Engine Number Location(S)

    Question Engine Number Location(S)

I know this site is for S owners but I thought someone here might be able to help with this one.

I recently purchased a 70T that came with a spare engine. I was told this engine was the original engine to the car and it was replaced with the one that is now in the car. It looks like the POPO tried to rebuild the original engine and gave-up after tearing it apart.

Last night I attempted to verify this story and to identify the now installed engine. The number of the engine in the car was easy to find and is actually a 70T engine. The spare engine does not have a number because the part of the block casting where the number should be is cracked-off. This immediately had me thinking that someone was trying to conceal the identity of this engine.

I can say that this car and the engines have not seen the light of day since 1987.

My question is this: Are the engine numbers stamped in any other location on the engine?

    Thank you.

    -Matt

Not the serial number that I know of but, the type number is stamped which will tell you if it's a T,E, or S . Also the case part numbers will tell you a bit based on the production. Otherwise you have to start digging into the rest of the components on the engine. Carbs, MFI, Type of carbs, Throttle body size, Head type, valve sizes etc.

This site IS NOT just for 'S' owners. This site is for all early car owners. This site merely considers itslef the caretaker of registering 'S' VINSs; general information is for all to share.

That said, there is no other place that the serial number is stamped. Does the engine still have the series stamp? It is just beloe and to the right of where teh serial would be. It woud look like this "901/nn", where 'n' means numbers like "02", etc.

Kenikh stated it PERFECTLY Matt... welcome to the board

The engine series number should be stamped where mentioned... with that you should at least know type of engine you have.... also, if you think the trans is original to the car, post it's serial number and we'll try to use that info using one of the factory spec books to get you closer to what the range of the engine numbers should be.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Question

Found the engine series number. Any idea what the "07" is for? Is it the year backward? Thanks for your help.

    Matt,

911/07 series engine is from a '70 T Karmann Coupe

    The engine # should be between 6103501 - 6104547

Coming out of a car with the chassis # between 9110120001 - 9110124126

    Hope this helps,
