Does anyone know of an available room within a 50 mile radius?
Thanks,
John

I always stay in Santa Cruz ... it's about 35-45 mintues (depending on traffic) north up the 1 and provides a nice vacation spot in addition to actually being able to find a room.
You should check the Best Western on Ocean St. as well as the Santa Cruz Inn (which I believe is owned and operated by my former school, UCSC) which may also be on Ocean. Go to the city's website and look through their Chamber of Commerce section.
It's not the cheapest way to go but at least you'll be able to find a place to hang your hat. You might also look in Aptos which is about 10 miles north of Santa Cruz; I found a great bed and breakfast there named the Apple Lane Inn which is where my girlfriend and I will be staying. They may still have rooms available.

Aptos is 7 miles South of SC (technically more East than South) and only 30-45 min from here down PCH to Monterey. Moss Landing on the way has a couple of great seafood places. Worth stopping.. As for the Apple Lane Inn..Great choice. That's where I married my wife 15 years ago. There is also the Seacliff Inn here off State Park Dr. exit off HWY1 (Aptos) that's decent (Best Western w/ good restaurant Severinos). Also the Bayview Hotel B&B in Aptos Village on Soquel Dr. that is quaint. Great restaurant right across the street. Cafe Sparrow (my favorite).Originally Posted by Mr9146

SO the Apple Lane Inn was a good choice? I was a little unsure of my decision at first, but the people seemed friendly on the phone and the pictures on the internet looked good so I figured, "What the hey?"

I booked a room in Santa Cruz. It's not too far - hopefully the traffic isn't impossible. Is it best to drive to Salinas and take the shuttle bus to the track or somesuch? Is there corral or paddock parking for Porsches? I'm driving my '72 911S Targa down from Bend, Oregon.
Thanks,
John

Santa Cruz is a great place to stay ... not too close and not too far. The traffic on the weekend isn't worth worrying about, but if you're around on Friday then you might have a little traffic.
If you have a ticket to the race then on-site parking is included. The corral was a PCA thing - an extra $55 on top of the ticket price - and registration is closed. But the walk from parking to the track is nothing to worry about. Everything is pretty close together.
HOWEVER, they do park you on dirt. The only way around this that I've found is to get to the track crazy early and park near the timing tower. It's the only concrete parking that I've found on-site since I started going up there.

Hey, I forgive you, bein SoCal and all I think you'll like it. Converted Victorian farmhouse. The place is easy to miss though. Almost impossible to see from the street and a small sign on the roadside.Originally Posted by Mr9146
John, the traffic from Santa Cruz will be a little heavier an slower than normal but, not bad. They are widening HWY 1 from the 17 Exchange (the Fish Hook) down to Morrisey. Really ugly Ripped out all the native vegetation to put up walls. OUght to be really pleasant when they are done Bastards . Anyway, I'd allow a little more time. The available roadway is very narrow and slows up. Once past Capitola you won't have to worry until you are past Moss Landing and then it's dodging tractors early in the morn. From downtown SC it will take you about an Hour.

I would highly recommend the Pelican Point Inn, in Santa Cruz. It is small (12 rooms), south of downtown, and is 1/2 block from the beach. It is basically new from the ground up, and is Porsche friendly - it better be, my father owns it. Rates are very reasonible. I keep telling him to charge more...
