    Oversteer or understeer?

My 81SC seems to understeer quite a bit. Is this typical or is it just my car? The book, SC Campanion, says the cure for understeer is softer front suspension and stiffer rear suspension. Does that sound right?

Usually that is the quick answer, soften up the front sway bar and stiffen the rear. But as I recall, I don't believe your factory bars are adjustable. Normally, production cars are dialed in with some understeer vs oversteer as it is more comfortable for most drivers (and keeps them out of trouble). But it shouldn't be excessive. I would start with making sure you alignment, camber, castor, and toe are within range. As well as the rest of your suspension, bushings, ball joints, tires, shocks, etc. 911's are known for good handling out of the box, bone stock. If you're still experiencing a lot of understeer, you could try increasing the rake on the car, rasing the rear or lowering the front to transfer more weight to the front. But remember, 911's drive differently than most cars and at the edge, we use the throttle to steer the car around the turn at speed and not the wheel as much. Maybe a new set of tires and an alignment is all you need depending on your driving style. Hope this helps, Allan

When you think in you're in full control, you're just not driving fast enough
