When I restored my car I discovered it had an aluminum license panel. Was this an option on a 1970 911E?
Thanks,
Britt

Is your engine lid aluminum as well?

911E and S in 1970 came standard with aluminum center panels and deck lids. Not available as an option on T.
My old 1970 E Targa came with aluminum license panel and deck lid.

My '70E has the original aluminum decklid, but the license panel was replaced with a steel one at some point. Curious, in that the Leistritz muffler looks original and undamaged, so it probably wasn't from being rear ended... I just found a tired aluminum panel to replace the steel one.
Dr. Brett Johnson writes (pg.5, Restorer's Guide) that in '70-'71, only the S had a the aluminum bits, and he doesn't mention it as an option for the other models. I can't find my COA and can't remember whether it was an option or not, but many I have talked with believed the two were stock equipment on both E and S models.

I think the aluminum license panel and decklid were hit and miss on the E's. There is a Porsche brochure from that period that states that it was standard on the E's and S's.... but I bought my 71E from the original owner (with 43K on the odometer back in 1992) and 95% original paint...and no aluminum on my car (sadly...). The parts book from 71 states that the license panel is aluminum on the E, but that the engine lid is supposed to be steel (the S is supposed to have both in aluminum).

The Brian Long book Porsche 911 The Definitive History 1963 to 1971 page 153 states: "In a bid to offset this extra weight, the engine cover was crafted in aluminium on the E as well as the S."
No mention of the rear lic. plate panel in the book.

would a 72 E have the aluminun decklid!
I had a steel decklid, which I think was original. Replaced with a steel decklid from a 69E.

As several others have written, alu panels --- on 'E's or 'S's . . . don't seem to appear in any recognizeable/organized/predictable pattern . . . if they ever did
There is one little added wrinkle to all this. Any Karmann-built 'E' w/ an alu lid will have a 2-digit number stamped into the the vertical support . . . which should match the same numbers stamped on the doors and possibly the front fenders. I actually have a poll going on this topic . . . .

I bring this up because my car now has just such a panel --- an alu lid that was 'E'-badged when I purchased it, stamped '25'
The Short Version is that Karmann-built cars have 'matching' numbers on some of their body-panels --- including any alu bits . . . it looks like up thru ~'71
