    Steering Ratios

Was there an optional lower ratio or rallye steering rack/box available for early LWB 911's? If so, can anyone give the comparative #'s vs the standard rack, or point me in the right direction?

This thread indicates a difference btw SWB and LWB standard rack steering ratios. Can anyone comment on putting either a "rallye" or SWB shorter ratio rack in a LWB car? Also, any sources for the lower ratio racks?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    From the Paul Frere book

The 911 originaly came with a 16.5 to 1 steering rack. This apparantly was an expensive design, and with the introduction of the 914 a new steering rack was introduced. Now cheaper to make and with a 17.78 to 1 ratio.

    Steering Ratio

Peter the 16.5 had a Steering wheel turns lock to lock of 2.07. What was the lock to lock of the 914 17.78?

According to the FIA homologation, the steering on the RS featured a 2,83 lock to lock ratio. This is probably the same as the 914 rack but i am not sure

    Thanks

Peter, Bob - thanks for answering my question on SWB vs LWB.

Any idea if there was a different "sports purpose" ratio rack? I don't have a copy of the later '70,'71 "sports purpose" manual, but I do have a copied version of the '68 manual shown here by ErnieW which doesn't give a steering rack/box as an option either in the kits or separately.

Eric911S, anything in your later sports purpose manual?

    Thanks to all.

    Steering rack

Bob T. the steering rack change from 1968 to 69 seems to coinsided with the ball joint and strut changes for the 69> with improved tie rods.

There isn't any mention in the "1970, 911S 914/6 Sports Purpose", or the "1970 Type 914/6 Spare Parts List". Just the smaller padded steering wheel #914.347.901.00.

Have you found a secret factory winning LeMans setup?

    Secret Trick

    Bob F.-

Thanks for clarity on 1970. I don't think I've found a secret weapon, but even if I did given my driving skills the world would never know it.

The SWB to LWB rack conversion does sound like an easy way to get a little more responsive steering. I'm waiting on comments from one who has done it to find out what if any snags there are. Will report back.

    Quick racks

We have a few which we have had made specially: about 2 turns.

They are really intended for rally 911R replicas..

Let me know and I'll see if we can get some more in a reasonable timescale and pricing..

    Kind regards
    David
