How to determine original Durant round side mirror?

Okay so another rookie restoration question...how can you determine if you have an original Durant round side mirror? I am missing mine and looking for a replacement, I was told that it has a "Made in Germany" stamp on the housing???

    Thanks,
    Sam

PS - Be prepared for many more of these rookie questions....

Made in Germany stamp: so do the reproduction ones out there! the weight of a real durant should be heavier than the repro- but if you don't have both side by side.....

there are others here that can probably point out more differences

this is an original mirror for SWB (actually from '60 - '67) I *think* the logo is the same for the LWB cars. these are either being "repopped" or the original manufacturer has retooled. the stars on the current offering are smaller and grouped differently. i don't have an example to photograph for comparison purposes. they both indicate Made in Germany.

Jerry is right about the logos being the same for LWB cars. Here is the logo on my original. Also, a photo of one I bought from Stoddard's a couple of years ago...looks the same to me, but engraving is somewhat deeper. Maybe just age. Also, I think you can get a repro for much less$ from Performance Products. Goood luck.

I have never found a repro mirror to feel as smooth as an original when one runs ones finger around the rim. The repros always feel a bit rough!

    Hope this helps

I don't know about others' experience with the repops but when I installed the one I bought from Performance Products I found it wouldn't articulate enough to do what it's supposed to, i.e. show me upcoming traffic while I'm in the driving position. I just couldn't get it into the right position. I've since bought an original from Stoddard. Go figure.

What NickR said. I bought mine from Perf Prod and have never really been happy with it.

One is the adjustment issue. Also, the base seems to be a little wider and doesn't fit on the door the same as the original. You can see it in the way the mirror and gasket line up with the door edge and in trying to get a wrench on the nuts to tighten the mirror to the door.
