    Re-skinning Doors

Anyone BTDT???? I'm working on my 72's doors and could just add metal to the bottom, but now I'm thinking it wouldn't be that much more work to simply replace the skins. Some sound advice here would be appreciated.

BTW, I think this is the best restoration site I've ever seen. Ever. Ask Daryll he's clearly BTDT for everything related to the body.

You're right on the money Bill. That's a great website for restoring the steel on these ol girls. What he's doing to his doors is exactly what I must do. Only question I have there is how much harder would it be to just replace the skin entirely? This would give a perfect outer door surface instead of one that faces possible weld distortion and additional use of filler.

I was looking at glass doors but didn't want to have to install a full roll cage to compensate, so steel will have to be used here and the doors are job one this fall. Only question I have is did the factory use lead to clear up any minor gap issues around the door?

I'm also looking at using aluminum door hinges for this. Anyone got any opinions on this? Were there such a thing as aluminum exterior door handles? Ya, I know, lots of questions. Sorry.

    Paul,

I have just been through this excercise with my current rustoration.
I was aware that both the doors were rust-junk so my body shop guys replaced them with later model galvanised doors from a 3.2 Carrera.
Yes,they have the intrusion bars but the fact the doors will last much longer than a repaired non-galvanised door more than makes the difference for me.
The bottom line is whether you want to keep the doors for a specific reason or just to be able to do the hands-on excercise as opposed to spending less time ,energy and money for a change over door,is up to you.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.
