Thread: Gas Tank capacity

  1. #1

    Question Gas Tank capacity

69 Manual says tank capacity is 16 gallons w/ 1.5 in reserve. The PO had tank replaced due to rust and when my guage is resting on "E", the most I ever can put in is 12.5 gallons.

Are replacement tanks smaller? or is my sending unit miscalibrated?

I'm not an expert on fuel tank sizes, but I do not think there are tanks that takes as little as 12.5 imp gallons. I have, however, experienced fuel gauges that are not accurate. Most likely the tank unit.

Bring some extra fuel and run the tank dry.

US gallon and UK gallon is not the same meassurement:

U.S. liquid gallon is 231 in³ (exactly) or 128 U.S. fluid ounce (exactly) or 3.785411784 liters

    U.S. dry gallon 4.404 884 L

Imperial (UK) gallon is 160 imperial fluid ounces (exactly), or 4.54609 L (legally). That is approximately 1.201 US gallons.

    Is this the problem?

I recently looked into replacing my gas tank with a later larger tank and read that 74-83 21.2 gallons and 84+ 22.5 gallons. Assume 65-73 is 16 or slightly larger as roblav mentioned.

(resurrecting an old post), can one just swap tanks? put in a larger tank from a later model? ideally best solution is to get atl or fuelcell make you a vintage cell with bladder. but upgrading fuel tank size, is this also a viable option? for a longhood?

    Gas Tank capacity

You can put in the larger tank from a big bumper car, there is slight difference in vent tube diameter and location, and you'll need to go to a space saver spare. Seems like there is also some difference in fuel fittings at bottom, can't remember exactly what though.

My 71 car was up dated too a late SC fuel tank. Close to 25 Gallons a bit more than 345 miles per tank at 85 mph . Was great running from Northern Michigan to Cincinnati Ohio, Round trip on less than 2 1/2 tanks. There were only two draw backs. Firts was the cost on a top off, second was when running with other Long hoods was the short stopping for fill ups. If I remeber right it was pretty much a drop in and yes I did have to go to a space saver and a Porsche air compressor. The same SC provided all the needed parts for the converssion.
