    Competition Press OnLine

The forerunner of Autoweek. Anyway, somebody has gone thru and began to scan complete issues (50's thru 1969 so far) and they are available for free download here:

    http://www.box.net/public/c5bdnu4srq

Not only that, there's West Coast Sports Journal:

    http://www.box.net/public/khciz7244d

    Motor Sports World (1951-1952)

    http://www.box.net/public/72t6qudovc

    MotoRacing - a SoCal journal from 1955-1964.

    http://www.box.net/public/iboyi76hqk

There's weeks (months?) of great reading here!

The downloads are a little slow, although they are very large files. A real goldmine!

Here's a classic: Dan Gurney wins in an EMPI VW bug in 1963!

And for those who didn't hear, Vasek Polak moved ......

    FANTASTIC Curt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remembering that back in the day Competition Press and Road&Track were the race car classifieds 'of record' for the whole country... they were all we had.... and now those classifieds will make you cry.........

One thing that really stands out is in nearly every issue, there's a report of the death of a well-known driver!

    Curt,

In spite of the fact that hundreds, or even thousands of websites are added to the WWW each day, I'm convinced that you are going to be the first human to have entered all of them at least once - at least those with automotive content. You have GOT to be surfing while driving to each of your inspection sites, right?

I was in attendance at a gathering of (very) old-time SCCA racers from the Milwaukee area last evening and our guest speaker was Fred Egloff, a guy who has been racing and rallying a BMW 328 for decades, and he spoke of the minimal printed news which was available to motorsport enthusiast in the early days. I'm going to fire off this link to Fred and others in attendance, so don't be surprised if access to the site becomes rather slow....

BTW, Fred recently published a book entitled The History of the Checkered Flag, which includes many anecdotes about the early days of auto racing.

    Good Stuff!

    >>>>You have GOT to be surfing while driving to each of your inspection sites, right?<<<<

Ha! I work 12 hours a day and then find time for this somehow .... Actually, I'm just a VERY efficient and creative surfer. I know how to find obscure websites (many in other languages and/or other marques beside Porsche) that link to other sites that link to other sites, etc. So I find stuff on 5th and 6th generation links. My line of work requires substantial research (95% on the net, thank god!) so I have lots of practice. In the 'old days' I had to actually drive to university libraries and look thru real live books Now THAT took some time ..... this is the proverbial piece of cake
