    SWB Fuel Tank

Are there any differences between the stock fuel tanks used in SWB and those used in LWB cars?

    Thanks,
    John

    John,

Basically no. The standard fuel tanks are essentially the same ’65-’73. There are some subtle detail differences and finishes. These tanks have three fittings facing the rear (drain plug, fuel fitting with screen filter and one plugged (unless fitted with an auxiliary gasoline heater). The MFI fuel return is to the drain plug opening with a banjo. The first significant change comes with the ’73.5 911T CIS with an internal “swirl pot” and baffles. Next is in ’74 with the larger standard tank requiring the space-saver spare. With fuel line fitting differences, the tanks stay pretty much the same through ’89. These tanks have the fuel fittings (pipes) at the rear. The drain/screen filter access is at the bottom center of the tanks.

The ’65-’73 tanks are 62 Liters and the ’74-’89 are 80 Liters. There are larger optional or race fuel tanks of 100 and 120 Liters in both steel and plastic. Some are center-fill. All the larger tanks take a different (longer) fuel level sender if you want it to read full range to empty.

With only adapting the fuel lines, all tanks are interchangeable ’65-’89.

Of course there is more detail and there are exceptions.

    Best,
    Grady
