    better base for 911R Replica

    Hello,
I'd like to know what is the best to make a 911R replica.
An early 2.0l from 1965, or a 1972's one because the existing oil filler already existing.
I have the possibilty to buy the first one but considering that i'm racing a little bit in french club, i think that the second one is the best for the quality of driving,

    Thanks in advance.

    Freddy,

For authenticity, a short wheelbase car would be more appropriate for a 911R or T/R ...

However the factory did produce a 'lightweight' version of the long wheelbase cars from '69 up to the time they evolved into the S/T's which starting around late '70 through '72...

So.... for the look, it's kind'a up to you... the '72's oil filler is a nice touch

BTW - I have seen more and more 911 'hot rod' projects start with '69's (lightest standard LWB chassis) and '69 912's (lighter yet)

As far as drivability - They are both great in there own ways...

    The world is your oyster...

    Hope any of this helps,

    Cheers,

I always thought that a 68 was the perfect base for an R replica because of the gauges and break away style rear view mirror. I forget but I believe Ernie once told me a 68 912 for some reason.

    Bob's right.
A 68 912 would be the best way to go.
Since the real 911R was built on the 68 911/912 base, you are starting with the real deal. A 912 is best because you can pick up a nice clean one much cheaper than a 68 911. Since it is going to be heavily modified when you are done with it, why not start out the project cheaper with a car that costs $5-10k, rather than one which cost $12-20k?!

    Weight?

    My references list the 1969 - '71 911's as 2249 lbs. The 1972 - '73 as 2310 lbs.

Does anyone know the weights of the following?

    1967 911 & 912
    1968 911 & 912
1969 911 & 912 (I think my 1969 reference is incorrect. I have also heard that the 1969 was the lightest chassis)

    Thanks,

Hello: I have heard that the 70 model is the lightest with it's aluminum rear bumper section and engine lid. The 69 is next with Webers so the T is lighter than the E or S. The non sport seat cars are lighter as well. It also depends on how much undercoating and interior sound proofing was installed. The 912's are getting more expensive since the historic race guys are buying them for 911 race cars. I would do a long wheelbase car and add the 993 oil tank with the filler cap added. That gives you more cars to choose from. If you do a early short wheelbase car then you will have to weld on some flares to make it look right. Hope this helps. Thanks Eric

My references list the following weights
    66-68 912 995 Kg
    67 911 1080
    69 911T, E 1020
    69 S 995
    70-71 911 1020
    72-73 911T 1050
    73 E, S 1075
Not sure that all makes makes sence. The important question would be what does the chassis weigh w/o engine and tranny, one would think if chassis were similarly equiped there would be little difference.

I have heard that the Karman bodied 69-71 were the lightest 911's as well being a little more rare. Has anybody else heard of this also?

Hello: Yes the Karman bodies are the lightest. I have three cars with Karman bodies a 69 E and 70 E lastly a 70 S. The 69 did weight less than another 69 S. I still need to weight the 70 S someday. Thanks Eric
