Shift seal change w/o dropping engine?

Can the shift seal just behind the tunnel be switched without having to drop the engine? A buddy wants to know if he can disconnect the shift linkage, pull the old seal, and replace it without having to go through the extra steps of dropping the engine. The car is an '80 911 SC.

I'd welcome any information I can pass along.

    Thanks!

Hello: Yes you can change the shift rod seal in the car. Just be careful when removing the old seal. Thanks Eric

I had to do this. And I will be honest it was a pain in the ass. In fact it
was a terrible job and I would up replacing it at the Shop when they had the motor out a year later.

Make a PVC pipe to fit over the shaft with the seal and smooth the edge use the to press the seal into the shaft. Make Sure to geT ALL the remnants of hte old seal out. Grease the new seal good and use pipe to press it in.

    Good Luck
