Thread: Final thread on transition from 65-66 model yr!

  1. #11
Many of the changeover points for differences between the years are undocumented, as Dr. Johnson points out. But a few of the more obvious differences are:

Four screw grills replaced by two screw grills (from 303468)
Solexes replaced by Weber 40IDA and engine change to 901/05 (Feb 66)
Rubber shift boot instead of leather
Washer bottle relocated from wheel arch to behind trunk latch panel
901/0 gearbox to 902/1 (shorter gears so car could reach redline in top)

As far as the cutover point for other things like Nadella Axles, I'll have to do some more research.

Are these changes between the model years July 65/July 66 or year of manufacture December 65/January 66?

Some guy also told me you could separate the 65 from the 66 by the locking mecanism in the door handles, but I dont know if he ment year of manufacture or model year?

You mean convex vs. concave locks (cylinders) which also take a slightly different handle?

Assuming that in August the model was changed to 66, than it must be year of manufacturing since I have seen cars from after August 65 that still have the convex locks and very early style handle.

    Hi All,

I'm new on here, so here's my first post.

I've got chassis number 301940 and according to my Kardex it was manufactured in July 1965 and delivered to AFN in England on the 1st August 1965. According to some records I have, this was the last UK consignment before factory shutdown and the last car on that consignment was chassis number 302029, which also carries a July build date.

WOW then the last 65 (model year) car must have been 302029 !!! Alot of people have been trying to find this out! May be someone who knows Flemming should send him a message.

    John,

Not necessarily. It was the last car in the UK consignment. Being it RHD cars, they were probably made in a small serie. Of course it's possible that that serie was the last run before factory shutdown.

There are only two ways to tell:

    a. the production books
    b. pull the Kardex from 301940 - 302140

But still I am wondering, what are the differences between the 65 and 66 model year? Which differences were introduced after the summer break?

    Richard

p.s. but it's kind of unlikely that 303382 was a 65 model year car

Now you've got me really thinking. What seems strange is that the information I have shows production dates for August and one car for September. There are no production dates in October and the next production date is November with delivery scheduled for November 30th and January 3rd 1966.

I'm showing one car manufactured in August which was delivered to the UK on October 17th.

If someone can confirm the production shutdown date I might have a later chassis number!

Richard, you are of cource right, and your claim that the transition was approx. 200 cars past 301812/13 is probably also very near the truth.

LGK6D....we are holding our breath...what's your paint code?

This is so cool. Forty years out and we can get excited about a piece of Porsche history.

(Zithlord/John ..your too generous, I only need one "m" in Fleming)

I thought you said the factory closed for the whole of August?

    Hi Mike,

I have not said that the factory closed for the whole of August. As a matter of fact I think that they only closed for 2 weeks.
