The 901's and early 911's through about 300100 had a different ignition key than used for the door. We posit that Porsche AG had gotten their supplier(s) lined up to match door and ignition locks. Around chassis number 300100 they moved to one key for ignition and door, although for about ten cars or so, it went back and forth. Thanks.

Let the misinformation and contradiction end here.

As Bob's chart illustrates, 303390 was the first 911 manufactured in Calendar Year 1966. We know this because 302981 rolled off the line on November 24, 1965, and 304065 (my car) dates from April 1, 1966. With 1084 body numbers in four months (roughly) that's about 271 cars a month, which would put 303390 right about January. Of course this is all an estimate, the daily production varied and I'm sure there were plenty of holidays, but it's a close enough linear interpolation.

The numbers in all the books correlate serial number to CALENDAR year.

Now, as far as model year goes, the factory is closed in August, so the last cars from the 1965 Model Year were completed in July, and cars built in September onward are 1966 Model Year. So if your car was sold November, 1965, (like Fidalgo911S, #302947) it was a 1966 Model Year car. A lot of the confusion arises because people look at the port chainbox and see the Solex fuel pump and think 64 or 65, but '66's made up until February of 1966 had Solexes.

Now, the state DMV is an entirely different matter. I've heard that many '65s were titled as '66s, I cant verify that. Ignore the title, go by the numbers stamped into the body.

That should clear it up. #303382 is a 1965 production, 1966 Model Year car, probably manufactured in December, 1966, with Solex Carbs, 2-Screw Horn Grills, washer tank behind the trunk latch panel, adjustable camber strut tops, etc. Again, ignore everything but what your eyes see.
My porsche 912 is also built on november 24, 1965 (vin 351608). full matching number. Were the 912 and 911 built on the same line? I have a 5 speed gearbox nr ° 225293. At vinnumber 302981 the gearbox is no ° 225230. this means that over 60 cars were assembled in 1 working day. Quite a lot of cars

Porsche probably had a supply of completed transmissions and probably did not worry about getting them into cars in numerical order. I've seen a photo of a whole lot of 356 engines sitting on the floor in Stuttgart waiting to go into cars.

I have a 1965 RHD 911 and it was produced on the last day of production prior to the August holidays on July 30 1965, Chassis number 302030 (according to the Kardex) all matching numbers.
This may be the last 911 produced in the 1965 year. I have read earlier on this forum that #302029 may have been the last "65" car.

Hi Trevor, interested to see any more info on your car - eg Kardex - and its history that you feel able to share. I am compiling a register of early RHD cars and have yours down as one of a group of 3 consecutive chassis-numbers that came to the UK in mid-August. Best wishes, Robert

Are all armrests black (regardless of upholstery color) until around August 1965 and after that only match the rest of the upholstery -- through 1968?

The only Porsche suggested model year change from 1965 to 1966 was by gearbox numbers per the spec. book (illustration above). On the attached service bulletin it gives the date of the change in the 902/1 five-speed as July 26, 1965. This series gearbox is the only one that did not start with a unique number but continued as a series and was used in both 911 and 912s. The service bulletin also contains the first few 911s to receive this gearbox (numbers start at 221722). If nothing else, it shows how out of chassis number order cars were completed (though they have sorted it into increasing numbers).

The other two gearbox types that changed on the same day are:

    902/0 912 four-speed 1965 end: 162225 1966 begin: 163001
    911 four-speed 1965 end: N/A 1966 begin: 200001

Obviously, early gearboxes were used on later cars, but this should place the 1965/1966 transition to around 302000, yes?

Is there any research on 912 affiliated chassis numbers out there -- or another service bulletin?

BTW, the sake of uniformity only lasted one year.
