Mark, thanks for your post. Let me help clear things up a bit for you. The production date of July 26, 1965 would , most likely, be the actual production line date at Porsche. But the Kardex dates, and subsequently the CoA dates which are copied from the Kardex, are never production line completion dates despite what PCNA may say. The Kardex dates are either the date the car was invoiced by the factory to the distributor or the actual date of sale which was when the warranty commenced. The Kardex is a warranty record card, not a production document. While most Kardex are reasonably complete and correct, there are some that are blank or missing a lot of information, and a few have errors which are really hard to notice. It is also known that the factory made errors on the cars themselves such as an incorrect VIN.
The service bulletin in post 534 above shows that the the cars listed from 302073 and on plus the 17 exceptions listed with it got the new transmission series. Since your car does not appear as an exception, it would have the original series transmission. This would indicate that your car was completed before July 26, or there is the possibility that for a short time both transmissions were being installed at random, and the list reflects which cars got transmissions from the latter series. With 17 exceptions it is quite possible that it is too many to be completed in one day, thus my guess that both transmissions were being installed concurrently for a day or two is a possibility. With a VIN range spanning 90+ cars (301981 to 302073) you can see that the VIN sequence of cars in production at any given time was quite jumbled.
Here is a snapshot of 20 cars from the production book and the dates they were actually completed; the letter after the date is a sequence # for that day:
300381 1965 01 28 c
300382 1965 01 27 f
300383 1965 01 28 d
300384 1965 01 29 c
300385 1965 02 02 a
300386 1965 01 29 e
300393 1965 02 02 f
300394 1965 01 29 d
300395 1965 02 02 e
300397 1965 02 01 f
300398 1965 02 01 a
300399 1965 02 01 b
300400 1965 02 01 h
300401 1965 02 01 c
300402 1965 02 02 c
300403 1965 02 02 d
300404 1965 02 01 e
300413 1965 01 27 a
300474 1965 01 27 d
300597 1965 01 26 f
So a span of over 210 cars with the two highest VIN completed days before the lowest VIN. Despite my experience with looking at thousands of Kardex and CoA, I find the two outliers on that list to be quite stunning. How did these two cars jump the line so much?
Your current transmission could have come from a 911 or 912 produced in April or May 1966. Paint code 6206 was a 1962 code for silver, and was used into 1967 model year; older codes were optional at extra cost.
Please post a photo of the corner of your dash through the open drivers door showing the end of the knee pad and ignition bezel; I can tell from the knee pad and bezel which model year is most likely. I would love to see the CoA and Kardex if you have it. Confidentially if you wish. Dave
