What is that screen and duct doing down under the passenger footwell area?
Anyone have a Porsche part number on that?

The screen and duct are for the A/C return. A quick of the PET6 could not locate a part number, but if you are in need let me know. I won't be reusing the one's I have.

    Hi Bill,
I gather you knew I was kidding. I know that this is where the hole was cut into the the early 911's to funneling the air for A/C, but I never saw it removed and replaced with screen from a backyard screen door.

Screen (also known as "Hardware Cloth")

That's original; I hate to admit it but that's what mine looked like as well as others I've seen.

    Best,

    Tom and Bill,
I learn something new here every week. Last week it was green tagging engines at the factory. This week it's the screen. So was this factory or dealership installed? I had always understood that the a/c was a dealer installed option. Would the sceen havd been used instead of the vent system set-up which attached underneath the dash knee pads?
    Thanks

The screen is the air intake for the evaporator which is hidden in the smugglers box. The screen keeps the "big stuff" out of the evaporator.
I'm quite sure the factory installed vs. dealer systems are similar in this area. The early Porsche A/C system is pretty crude at best and there are a lot of things that can be done to improve it. Griffiths as well as Scotts Independent, Inc. Porsche repair (Performance Aire) have done some pretty remarkable things to make the A/C systems in the early cars work very well.
